Is Comic-Con Going Mainstream?

The past few years has proven to pave the way for the major geek fest in San Diego, Comic-Con, towards mainstream ‘glory.’

In fact, new panels with titles of “I Can’t Write, I Can’t Draw, But I Love Comics!” and “Indie Comic Marketing 101” tend to draw in the less die-hard fans, but leaves many of the elitists fuming.

“The mainstream TV and film representation at Comic-Con has outstripped the original essence of the convention,” said iReporter Brad Powers who attended Comic-Con the past two years, mainly for the panels on “Lost.”

While many of the more traditional Comic-Con fans like Powers are furious, there’s no denying that the convention has been packed to the brim the last two years.

For one panel, Powers said he arrived a full 45 minutes before it was set to begin. “Thirty minutes passed and I thought for sure I was getting closer to the front door. Finally, 10 minutes after the start, some nice Con attendee started walking back through the line to let everyone know that they were full up and no one else would be getting in.”

One self journalist, Michelle Cruz, has not attended in years. “I don’t even try anymore,” she said.” “They should have a Commercialism-Con and bring back Comic-Con the way it used to be.”

“It’s too crowded, too commercial, and, oh yea, it sells out before you even know who’s gonna be there,” she said. “I’d be really disappointed spending my money and seeing that I was gonna go to a panel discussion about [the Fox series] ‘Glee.’ ”

The commercial presence of shows such as “Glee” continues to fan the flames of anger among devotees. However, there are those who disagree.

Erin O’Donoghue, a hardcore fan of “Chuck,” claims, “I am not one of those who believe it should remain solely in the realm of comics and their related forms of media,” she said. “I personally really enjoy the fact that SDCC has become a celebration of popular culture and every entertainment medium.”

Fanbolt.com’s Emma Loggins also accepts the presence of these panels at Comic-Con. “I think that what it’s really about is anything that has a strong fan base. It also brings in other people to the convention that otherwise wouldn’t be interested,” she said.

Plenty of panels, such as one for Will Ferrell’s cop comedy “The Other Guys,” and “Glee” will ensure the debate continues between fanatical devotees and main-streamers.

Lindsay’s Slice of Humble Pie

Lindsay Lohan’s three-month sentence at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California will soon serve up a steaming slice of fresh humble pie for the rebellious young actress soon to trade in her Gucci pumps for regulation white sneakers.

She follows in the footsteps of Paris Hilton who, after violating her probation in a DUI case, served 23 days of a 45-day sentence at the very same institution and was released early for good behavior.

Because of Hilton’s experience and the sheriff’s long-standing tradition of releasing nonviolent offenders early for good behavior to relieve the overcrowded conditions, legal experts agree that Lohan will likely only serve two weeks to a month of her sentence, beginning July 20th.

When describing her first few nights spent in jail, Lohan told the press that she “was basically in the fetal position, basically in hysterics.” When asked about her impression of her fellow violators, she described the girls as “very supportive…we could talk through the vents and they were just really sweet.”

No special conditions will be met for Lohan’s incarceration other than to separate her from the general prison population for her safety and that of the guards. Just as every of the 1,800 other inmates upon arrival, Lohan will be photographed, fingerprinted, and searched according to L.A. sheriff’s spokesman, Steve Whitmore. She will then be placed in a holding cell, after which she will be assigned a 12 x 8 cell featuring two bunks, a toilet, sink, stool, and small tabletop. A slender 6 inch window will be Lohan’s only opportunity to view the outside world.

In fact, Lohan will most likely be kept within that very cell for 22 hours a day, allowed to leave for one hour of recreation time where she will have to choose between watching TV, playing basketball, making a phone call, or taking a hot shower. 20 minute meals begin the day at a mandatory 5 a.m. wakeup call, with breakfast consisting of two hard-boiled eggs, two pieces of wheat toast, and an orange juice carton. Lunch and dinner follow throughout the day, consisting of similarly bland fare.

Lohan might just be wishing for a slice of humble pie after three months of such cuisine.

Apologies Made for Bad Blood After Breakup

Usually bad feelings after a breakup don’t make their way to the news, but when you have a famous Mom like Bristol Palin does, everything said can find its way to the public. In this case, Levi Johnston isn’t just trying to make amends with his ex, but also trying to appease her mother.

“Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true,” he divulges to the media. “I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize.”

Bristol put her two cents in Tuesday stating, “Part of co-parenting is creating healthy and honest relationships between the parents. Tripp one day needs to know the truth and needs to know that even if a mistake is made the honorable thing to do is to own up to it.”

A cold war had erupted been between 20-year-old Johnston and the former vice presidential candidate, complete with accusations of Palin complaining about her appointment as governor of Alaska and whispers of divorce in the Palin household.

Palin responded, citing Johnston’s remarks as “malicious” and smearing him for his controversial playgirl spread and open, carefree comments regarding sexuality on ‘the Tyra Banks Show.’

Despite a bitter custody battle and ill-mannered attitude towards a rather infamous grandmother, Johnston has stated that he and Bristol, who recently made an acting debut on ABC Family’s ‘the Secret Life of the American Teenager,’ want to turn “a new page…as co-parents…and [put] aside the past because doing so is in Tripp’s best interest.”

“So to the Palin family in general and to Sarah Palin in particular, please accept my regrets and forgive my youthful indiscretion,” Johnston says in the statement. “I hope one day to restore your trust.”

Twilight Plummets For July 4th Weekend

After grossing $68.5 million on its opening day last Wednesday, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has slowed down for the July 4th weekend. On Wednesday, Eclipse grossed the second highest ever opening day box office receipts record, just falling short of last year’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which grossed $72.7 million in it’s first day. Ever since that day however, Eclipse has only averaged $23 million a day over the next four days, including an estimate for what is expected on Sunday July 4th.

So far over five days, its total of $161 million is short of the five-day record of $200 million set last year by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Richie Fay, who is head of distribution for Summit Entertainment, which produces the Twilight Series, said that he thought the weather was holding down box office sales as people enjoy the nice weather, the fireworks, and barbecues this weekend. He was optimistic that people would come back to watch the movie after the holiday.

Despite the drop in revenue, Eclipse easily held the number one spot for the weekend, with a three day weekend total of $69 million. Despite awful reviews from critics, The Last Airbender from Paramount took in $40.7 million to capture the number two spot for the three day weekend. Toy Story 3, which had held the number one spot the last two weekends came in at number three with $30.2 million.

Total Hollywood revenues were at $193 million from Friday to Sunday, up 19% from the July 4th weekend last year. Revenues for the 2010 season are $2.16 billion, which is slightly down from last year. However, once higher ticket prices are factored in, summer attendance is down 6.9% from last year.
