Friday Ushers in Generation 4 of iPhone

After a disastrous discovery regarding a major software glitch in the iPhone’s signal-strength display, Apple announced to the international community that it plans to hold a press conference discussing the current generation of iPhone.

Friday marks the beginning of the discussion at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters where Apple spokespersons will address the delays in launching the software update tackling the glitch in iPhones regarding the bar measuring signal strength.

An Apple spokesman declined to discuss any further details of the conference.

Apple’s problems don’t end there. Consumer Reports’ product testers announced Monday that yet another hardware design flaw exists that causes calls to drop. This can easily be fixed by putting the phone in a case or using the universal fix-all, duct tape, to cover the gap between the phone’s two antennas; however, Consumer Reports refuses to commend the phone to consumers until Apple addresses this newest issue.

Apple denies that the iPhone 4 has any hardware flaws and declines to comment on Consumer Reports’ findings. Despite its faults, the iPhone 4 was Apple’s most successful product launch in its corporate history, selling 1.7 million phones in just the initial three days. The phone continues to remain unavailable in most retailers. Despite the damning findings by Consumer Reports, it still labels the iPhone the best smart phone on the market.

So when choosing your next smart phone, it may be essential to do a cost-benefit analysis deciding whether it’s worth the inconvenience of missed calls and software glitches to own the best smart phone out there.

European Beaches: More ‘Relaxed’ Than American Beaches

Any American traveler that’s taken a European tour can immediately identify our nation’s discomfort with nudity. Whether visiting a public bath, flipping through couture ads in a European magazine, or hanging out at the beach, nudity will be a large component.

Europeans seem to have no problem with getting naked. A visit to the south of France will reveal sunbathing grandmothers without tan lines, while in Norway, children play naked in public fountains.

Americans are quite taken aback with what they see during their everyday routines.

Even advertisements are often risqué in comparison to what we’re used to. In Belgium, billboards feature up close shots of women’s soapy breasts, while a Copenhagen student tourist center welcomes visitors with a bowl of free condoms on their desk.

Quite the shocker to the common American.

But if you as a traveler can put aside your natural American tendency towards prudishness, you can enjoy the many naked wonders Europe has to offer. Finland offers public saunas warmed by wood stoves with, you guessed it, naked locals soaking. Public baths were not just for cleaning up, but also for social events to take place, like celebrating a new birth or finding suitable potential daughters or sons in law.

Some of the most legendary of beaches lie in Croatia… they don’t have a dress code.

However, this comfort with nudity does not extend across the entirety of Europe. The Vatican features statues with fig leaves covering the naughty bits, representing the conservative views of the Church.

While you may not subscribe to the more loose European approach to nudity and the majesty of the human body, there’s no crime in appreciating it from a distance.

Build the Engine Yourself When You Buy a Corvette

Depending on your expertise level and interest, usually you buy a car with the impression that it has already been assembled. However, for those with the proper motivation and the finances to support it, GM is offering Chevrolet Corvette buyers the option to build the car’s engine themselves.

To the tune of $5,800, a consumer can purchase the “Engine Build Experience” option on Corvette Z06 and ZR1 cars, two top-of-the-line versions of the Corvette with engines typically hand-assembled at a plant in Wixom, Michigan, near GM’s headquarters in Detroit. Those who chose this option are invited to Wixom to assemble their very own engine under the supervision of trained GM techs. This also includes the addition of a personalized nameplate attachment to the engine, which is then sent to Bowling Green where the rest of the car sits waiting for complete assembly.

“In a way, this is a dream program for a Corvette customer. I would have jumped at the chance to build the 427 in my ‘67 ‘vette, and that didn’t have half of what goes into one of these modern precision engines,” said Tom Stephens, GM vice chairman for global product operations, in an announcement.

Any car fan would drool over the roughly $70,000 Z06 with its 505 horsepower, 7.0 liter, V8 engine. But then again, why not go for truly impressive power with the $110,000 ZR1, possessing a 638 horsepower, 6.2 liter, V8 engine? Despite being built by those less than professionally trained, these engines still get the perks of a 5-year, 100 grand mile warranty.

Those who choose to make their way to Wixom are still responsible for their own travel expenses, but GM does provide a concierge capable of arranging lodging and meals while in the area. For any car fanatic, the experience is well worth the cost.

6 Ways Car Rental Companies Can Drive You Nuts

If you’re frustrated with the way airlines run things, take a good long look at the rental car business. Similar to airlines, car rental companies have no problem with hiking your rates, but unlike airlines, they have the nerve to raise the price after you drive off the lot.

1. The price is right?

The first issue with car rental agencies is their loose definition of what a set price should be. Fees for bringing the car back can run you up to $1,000/day. Talk about a situation where buying the movie would be way cheaper than paying the late fees.

Oh but there’s worse. They can even charge more for returning the car early. That’s right, a weekly rate can be reset to a higher price if the vehicle comes back even a day early.

2. Ageism?

For those of you of the younger persuasion, 25 and younger to be exact, car rental companies can charge you extra every day simply for being young. If you’re under 21, forget about trying to even rent a car in the first place. The theory being that the younger the patron, the more likely they are to wreck the vehicle…but isn’t that the purpose of insurance?

3. Two drivers? Sure that’ll be $__ extra.

Need a second driver to relieve you? Car rental companies are willing to comply…for a little bit extra.

4. The law will cost you.

You’d think that something required by law like a child safety seat would be at no extra charge, and it is…in everywhere but car rentals. Agencies often charge the same amount as buying a safety seat simply to rent a cheap and inferior version.

5. You say compact, I say mid size.

You have to give it them for being creative. They’re even going so far as to sneakily change the car class on you so that renting a mid size is more like renting a compact.

6. Refueling fees anyone?

A recent rental contract states, “An automatic USD $13.99 refueling service charge will be applied to all rentals under 75 miles.” Apparently, if a car is driven under this mileage, the needle on the gas gauge will deceptively register full. Avoid this scenario by keeping receipts proving you don’t need to buy them a whole new tank of gas.
