Punjab Launches Chief Minister’s Health Scheme: Free Treatment up to Rs. 10 Lakh for 65 Lakh Families

Scheme Set to Begin January 15, with No Age Limit or Income Restrictions

The Punjab government is poised to revolutionize healthcare access across the state with the launch of the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme on January 15. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal will formally inaugurate the ambitious initiative, which aims to provide comprehensive health coverage to every family in the state.

Doubling the Coverage, Expanding Eligibility

Under the new scheme, health insurance coverage has been substantially increased from the previous Rs. 5 lakh limit to Rs. 10 lakh per family. However, the expansion goes far beyond merely doubling the financial coverage. Unlike its predecessor, which was restricted to certain categories, the new scheme extends benefits to all residents of Punjab, including government employees and pensioners, with no income limits or eligibility criteria.

“There is no income limit or other criteria to avail the benefits of this scheme,” stated Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the program.

How the Scheme Works

United India Insurance Company, which signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Health Agency, will provide the backbone of the insurance coverage. The scheme operates on a tiered structure: United India Insurance will offer Rs. 1 lakh in direct coverage to each of the 65 lakh families in Punjab, while the State Health Agency will provide insurance coverage for treatment expenses between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh on a trust basis.

The program utilizes the Innovative Health Benefit Package (MBP 2.2), ensuring comprehensive coverage through more than 2,000 selected treatment packages that address a wide range of medical needs.

Simple Registration Process

Recognizing the importance of accessibility, the government has streamlined the registration process. Beneficiaries need only their Aadhaar and Voter ID to enrol, with registration available through Common Service Centres (CSCs) across the state. Once registered, families will receive dedicated MMSY health cards. A helpline will also be launched to assist beneficiaries and address queries.

Robust Hospital Network

The scheme has secured the participation of 824 hospitals across Punjab, ensuring comprehensive healthcare access. This network comprises 212 government hospitals, 8 central government hospitals, and over 600 private hospitals. Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh indicated that this list is expected to expand further, strengthening the healthcare infrastructure available to beneficiaries.

Through this extensive network, beneficiaries can access both secondary and tertiary healthcare services on a cashless basis, eliminating financial barriers to treatment.

A Game-Changer for Healthcare Access

With the capacity to provide coverage to 65 lakh families, the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme represents a transformative step in Punjab’s approach to public health. By removing income restrictions, age limits, and categorical barriers, the state government is positioning healthcare as a universal right rather than a privilege.

As the January 15 launch date approaches, the scheme stands ready to become one of India’s most comprehensive state-level health insurance initiatives, potentially serving as a model for healthcare delivery across the country.
