Security at Chandigarh’s top medical institute — PGI — just got a major Army-style upgrade.
287 ex-servicemen who earlier guarded India’s borders in Leh-Ladakh have now taken charge of PGI’s security.

With their unmatched discipline, vigilance, and crisis-handling skills, these soldiers-turned-security officers will now ensure 24×7 safety across the hospital — including the Neurosciences Centre and Mother & Child Block.
The formal induction ceremony was held at PGI’s Nine Auditorium, led by Director Prof. Vivek Lal, who said the move will make PGI’s environment “safe, responsive, and patient-friendly.”
PGI has hired these ex-servicemen through Punjab Ex-Servicemen Corporation (PESCO), expanding its total security strength to around 1,000 personnel.
Prof. Lal emphasized that ex-servicemen bring “crisis management, discipline, and vigilance” — vital for a complex institute like PGI. Officials including Pankaj Rai (DDA), Ravinder Singh (Financial Advisor), Prof. Ashok Kumar, and Dr. Ranjit Pal Singh Bhogal also attended the event.

DDA Pankaj Rai said, “Security is the backbone of trust for patients and staff — this trained team will make that trust even stronger.”
