TARN TARAN:
In a stunning pre-election twist, the Election Commission of India has suspended Tarn Taran SSP Dr. Ravjot Kaur Grewal just three days before voting, following serious allegations of power misuse, illegal detentions, and political bias.

Akali Dal Blasts Police ‘Harassment Machinery’
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) unleashed a fierce attack on the district police, accusing SSP Dr. Grewal, SP (Detective) Rippurpan Singh, and CIA Staff Incharge Prabhjeet Singh of acting as political agents of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal and party candidate Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa claimed that the officers conducted illegal raids and harassed Akali workers to pressure them into supporting AAP candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu.
“This is not policing — this is political terrorism under the garb of law enforcement,” charged Sukhbir Badal, demanding the immediate removal of the officers and their arrest for violating the model code of conduct.
Akali Leaders Detained, Threatened with False Cases
According to the Akali Dal, several party workers — including Councilor Sham Singh (Ward 14), Sarpanch Varinder Singh, and former Sarpanch Balwinder Singh — were illegally detained by the police and threatened with fake cases if they didn’t switch allegiance to the ruling party.
SAD legal cell head Adv. Arshdeep Singh Kaler escalated the complaint to the Election Commission in Delhi, calling it a “blatant violation of democratic ethics and election neutrality.”
Election Commission Reacts Swiftly
Acting on the explosive allegations, the Election Commission suspended Dr. Grewal on Friday night, sending shockwaves through Punjab’s administrative and political circles.
Amritsar Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar (IPS) has been given additional charge as SSP Tarn Taran, while the Zonal Commissioner has been directed to submit a panel of three officers for a permanent replacement.
First Woman SSP Tarn Taran — Controversial Tenure Ends Abruptly
Dr. Grewal, who made headlines as Tarn Taran’s first female SSP, was appointed barely two months ago. Her tenure has now ended under a cloud of controversy, with multiple political parties questioning the political neutrality of the district police during the by-election.

Election on the Edge
As Tarn Taran heads into polling, the suspension has ignited a political firestorm. Opposition leaders say the move is proof of “systemic bias,” while AAP circles call it a politically motivated ploy by Akalis to regain lost ground.
One thing is certain — Tarn Taran’s by-election has turned into Punjab’s hottest political battleground, where every vote and every move is now under the Election Commission’s watchful eye.
