A massive voter list scandal is brewing in Uttar Pradesh — and the Election Commission seems to be fast asleep.
Despite the expiry of the deadline, 2.14 crore duplicate voters are still roaming free on the Panchayat election lists. Names of the same individuals appear twice, even thrice, exposing the utter chaos and negligence of the system.

According to internal data, the State Election Commission (SEC) had flagged 2.27 crore duplicate entries — but shockingly, only 13.28 lakh have been verified so far. That means a mind-numbing 94% of the bogus entries remain untouched.
Out of those verified, 1.63 lakh fake voters were deleted, but the rest continue to pollute the system. Officials were directed to verify all duplicate names between September 30 and October 13, but most districts simply ignored the orders.
⚠️ Election Machinery in Shambles
The Commission had asked districts to match names with Aadhaar numbers and delete duplicates. But sources admit that most local officials didn’t even start the process. With Panchayat elections due in April-May 2025, this failure could lead to massive voter fraud and rigged results.
The situation is so bad that there are over 50 lakh more voters in the local body lists than in the official Assembly and Lok Sabha rolls. In many areas, the same voter’s name appears in multiple Gram Panchayats — a clear recipe for electoral manipulation.

Experts Slam Election Commission
Experts have called it a blatant failure of governance. “Leaving 94% of duplicate names unverified is not inefficiency — it’s electoral negligence of the highest order,” said one senior observer.
If this isn’t fixed immediately, the credibility of the entire Panchayat election process is at stake.
