Adiala Jail Officials Dismiss Health Rumors About Imran Khan Amid Family Access Dispute

RAWALPINDI, PAKISTAN The administration of Adiala Jail issued a statement Thursday categorically denying circulating rumours about former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health and whereabouts, declaring the imprisoned leader is “completely healthy” and receiving proper care.

The clarification comes as unverified claims about Khan’s condition spread rapidly across social media platforms in recent days, with the hashtag “#WhereIsImranKhan” trending and some foreign media outlets amplifying speculation about his wellbeing.

Official Statement Addresses Rumours

In its official statement, the jail administration dismissed reports of Khan’s death, deteriorating health, or transfer from the facility as “completely false.” Officials emphasized that the 72-year-old former cricket star-turned-politician remains at the prison facility and is being provided with all necessary medical care and facilities.

Khan is not only safe but also present within the prison premises,” the administration stated, adding that his health is being continuously monitored and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership receives regular updates on his condition.

Six-Week Visitation Ban Fuels Concerns

The speculation gained momentum after Khan’s three sisters were barred from visiting him for six consecutive weeks, prompting family members to stage protests outside the prison walls. The extended restriction on family access has raised questions about transparency and Khan’s constitutional rights.

Khan has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail since August 2023 on multiple charges, including corruption and violations related to official secrets.

PTI Demands Government Accountability

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has demanded immediate action from authorities, calling for:

  • An official statement from the federal Home Ministry
  • Investigation into sources spreading unverified claims
  • Immediate lifting of “unofficial restrictions” on family visits
  • Guaranteed access for Khan’s family members, legal counsel, and party representatives

The rumours are sensitive in nature and those spreading them should be investigated,” the party stated in its response. “The country will not tolerate any uncertainty regarding Imran Khan’s condition, and the government is directly responsible for his safety and constitutional rights.”

Political Tensions Over Prison Access

PTI leader Mehr Bano Qureshi emphasized that the most effective way to dispel public concerns would be allowing verified, direct access to Khan. “The government should immediately issue a statement to reassure the public,” Qureshi said. “The most reliable way is to allow Imran Khan’s sisters, lawyers, and party leaders to meet him.”

The situation has highlighted questions about administrative control over the facility. While Adiala Jail operates under the jurisdiction of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s government, she has publicly stated she has no authority over Khan’s visitation rights.

Adding to the complexity, Khan himself previously alleged that an army officer was controlling prison affairs, a claim that underscores the political sensitivity surrounding his detention.

Background

Imran Khan, who served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022, was removed from office following a no-confidence vote. Since his ouster, he has faced numerous legal challenges and has been a vocal critic of the country’s military establishment and current government.

His imprisonment has become a flashpoint in Pakistan’s volatile political landscape, with PTI supporters regularly staging protests demanding his release and alleging political persecution.

The controversy over his health and access to family members represents the latest chapter in an ongoing struggle between Khan’s supporters and Pakistan’s ruling establishment over transparency and due process in his detention.
