Punjab’s PACE Program Transforms Educational Opportunities: 1,700+ Students Access Elite Coaching

Winter Residential Camps Prepare Government School Students for IIT, NIT, and AIIMS Entrance Exams

The Punjab government has successfully concluded its Winter Residential Coaching Camps under the Punjab Academic Coaching for Excellence (PACE) program, providing comprehensive training to over 1,700 meritorious students from government schools across the state. The ambitious initiative represents a significant step toward democratizing access to quality competitive exam preparation.

Record Enrolment Across Three Centres

A total of 1,728 students participated in the residential camps, which were held simultaneously at three strategically located centres in Ludhiana, Bathinda, and Mohali. The distribution reflected efforts to ensure equitable geographic access: Bathinda hosted 601 participants (359 girls and 242 boys), Ludhiana welcomed 573 students (327 girls and 246 boys), and the Mohali centre accommodated 554 students (367 girls and 187 boys).

Punjab Education Minister S. Harjot Singh Bains highlighted the program’s significance as part of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s broader vision for educational equity. “The enthusiastic response to the PACE Winter Camps reflects the immense potential of our government school students,” Bains said. “This initiative empowers young people, instils confidence in them, and provides a fair opportunity for deserving students from any background to study at top institutions.”

Comprehensive Selection Process Ensures Merit and Fairness

The program employed a rigorous, transparent selection mechanism based on multiple criteria including mock test performance, conceptual clarity, academic consistency, and teacher recommendations. A notable feature of the initiative is its reservation of 20 percent of seats at each centre for students from regular government schools and those taking a gap year, ensuring that talented candidates from Schools of Eminence, residential schools, and non-traditional pathways could all participate.

World-Class Training and Holistic Support

The PACE program partnered with leading coaching institutions including Physics Wallah, Vidya Mandir, and Avanti Fellows to deliver expert instruction. The curriculum emphasized conceptual understanding and advanced problem-solving techniques aligned with JEE and NEET examination patterns.

Beyond academics, the camps provided comprehensive support modules featuring daily doubt-clearing sessions, one-on-one mentoring, stress management workshops, career guidance, and recreational activities. Students benefited from improved residential facilities with safe accommodation, nutritious meals, 24-hour supervision, medical assistance, and counselling support, creating an environment conducive to focused studying.

Proven Track Record of Success

The government school system has already demonstrated strong results in competitive examinations. Last year, 265 government school students cleared the JEE Mains examination, 45 advanced to JEE Advanced, and 847 successfully qualified the NEET entrance exam—figures that underscore the potential within the state’s government institutions.

Minister Bains expressed confidence that the early intervention through the winter camps, particularly for 11th-grade students, combined with intensive support for 12th graders, would further elevate competitive exam performance.

A Model for Educational Equity

The PACE program reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to providing equal educational opportunities regardless of socioeconomic background. By combining merit-based selection with inclusive reservations, standardized curricula across centres, and robust student welfare measures, the initiative demonstrates how government institutions can deliver excellence while maintaining equity.

As more government school students access world-class coaching previously available only to those who could afford private institutions, the PACE program stands as a transformative model for educational access in India.
