Punjab Police Gears Up for 2026 with 10,000 New Recruits and Major Modernization Push

DGP Gaurav Yadav Unveils Comprehensive Vision for Enhanced Security and Emergency Response

Chandigarh — In a significant move to strengthen law enforcement capabilities across Punjab, the state government has approved the recruitment of 10,000 new police personnel, marking a major expansion of the force. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, who also outlined an ambitious modernization agenda for 2026.

Recognizing the unique security challenges faced by Punjab as a border state, the DGP emphasized the critical need for enhanced surveillance systems and increased human resources to combat emerging threats. With 1,600 officers already having completed their training and currently deployed in the field, the recruitment process is moving swiftly to meet operational demands.

Revolutionizing Emergency Response

At the heart of Punjab Police’s 2026 strategy is a comprehensive overhaul of the Dial-112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS). The department aims to dramatically reduce response times to emergency calls, targeting a response window of just 7-8 minutes.

To achieve this, the state government is investing Rs 52 crore to construct a state-of-the-art Dial-112 Central Control Room in Mohali. An additional Rs 50 crore has been allocated for the procurement of new emergency response vehicles. Furthermore, district control rooms across Punjab are undergoing upgrades with Rs 25 crore in investment to ensure seamless coordination during critical incidents.

Massive Infrastructure Development Plan

DGP Yadav announced an ambitious Rs 426 crore police building project spanning the next three years, representing a substantial commitment to modernizing Punjab Police infrastructure. The project includes construction of a new headquarters for the Cyber Crime Division in Phase-4, Mohali, new police lines in Nawanshahr and Malerkotla districts, and the establishment of 11 new police station buildings across the state.

The initiative also provides for opening new Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) range offices in Ludhiana, Ferozepur, and Jalandhar, with existing offices slated for upgrades featuring modern equipment and advanced forensic tools.

Cutting-Edge Technology Integration

Punjab Police is embracing technological advancement with the deployment of the Punjab Artificial Intelligence System (PAIS 2.0), an upgraded platform now equipped with sophisticated voice analysis capabilities. This technological leap will significantly enhance investigative efficiency across the state.

Complementing this effort, the Organized Crime Information System (OCIS) is undergoing further upgrades to streamline crime record management and provide more efficient criminal database access. Additionally, the state has implemented the Witness Protection Scheme in accordance with new criminal laws, a measure expected to improve conviction rates in serious cases.

Heightened Focus on Crime Prevention

The DGP made clear that 2026 will witness a more aggressive stance against drug trafficking and gangsterism. Special attention will be directed toward investigating and taking strict action against travel agents who facilitate the acquisition of fraudulent passports for organized criminals.

To address urban challenges, dedicated traffic and road safety police stations will be established in major cities. These stations will be integrated with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (IC3), enabling real-time monitoring through city CCTV feeds and adaptive traffic signals for improved traffic management and emergency response coordination.

Sustained Investment in Modernization

The DGP highlighted that the Punjab government has invested more than Rs 800 crore in police modernization over the past three years. This commitment is evident in tangible improvements across the force, including the provision of new vehicles to all senior police officers at the SP rank and comprehensive vehicle distribution to all police stations and police posts throughout the state.

IGP Headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill, present during the announcement, echoed support for the comprehensive modernization strategy, underscoring institutional commitment to the initiatives outlined.

With these developments, Punjab Police is positioning itself as a more responsive, technologically advanced, and substantially resourced force capable of addressing the complex security landscape of a border state in the coming year.
