CHANDIGARH – Punjab is witnessing a massive shift in its automotive landscape as residents rapidly pivot toward green energy. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, electric vehicle (EV) sales in the state surged by 48% in 2025, reaching a record-breaking 35,631 units, up from 24,008 in 2024.
The “electric craze” is particularly dominant in the two-wheeler segment, where Punjab has successfully outperformed its neighbours, including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Surge in Sales: A Statistical Breakdown
The transition to electric mobility is visible across both personal and commercial sectors. While two-wheelers remain the most popular choice, interest in electric cars has more than doubled within a single year.
| Vehicle Type | 2023 Sales | 2024 Sales | 2025 Sales |
| Two-Wheelers | 8,758 | 19,858 | 27,264 |
| Four-Wheelers | 791 | 4,150 | 8,367 |
| Total Sales | 9,549 | 24,008 | 35,631 |
While Punjab leads the region in two-wheeler adoption, the report noted that Haryana continues to lead in the four-wheeler category, recording 13,805 electric car sales in 2025.
Policy Extension Fuels Momentum
To maintain this trajectory, the Punjab government has officially extended its Electric Vehicle Policy by one year. Originally set to expire, the policy will now remain in force until February 20, 2027.
This extension ensures that buyers continue to benefit from direct financial incentives and subsidies. The policy, first implemented on February 21, 2023, is a cornerstone of the state’s strategy to curb rising pollution levels and modernize urban transport.
Key Highlights of the Policy:
-
Charging Infrastructure: Provisions to encourage the private and public establishment of charging stations.
-
Green Public Transit: Plans are underway to introduce electric buses in the major hubs of Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Patiala.
-
Incentive Scheme: A massive ₹50 crore fund has been formulated to attract EV manufacturers to set up plants within the state, alongside dedicated subsidies for three-wheelers and electric bicycles.
The Road Ahead
The results of the policy extension are already visible. In the first three months of the current cycle, over 7,000 electric vehicles have already been sold.
By focusing on a blend of consumer incentives and manufacturing support, the Punjab government aims not only to boost sales but to ensure widespread, long-term adoption of sustainable transportation. As infrastructure grows in major cities, the state is positioned to become a central hub for the EV revolution in North India.
