Political Earthquake in Punjab: AAP Faces Existential Crisis as BJP and Congress Predict Massive Defection of MLAs

CHANDIGARH The political landscape of Punjab is currently at a boiling point following a historic upheaval in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Just days after seven of the party’s Rajya Sabha MPs—six of whom represent Punjab—defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), sensational new claims suggest the tremors are now heading toward the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.

The stability of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government is being openly questioned as high-profile leaders from both the BJP and Congress claim that a massive chunk of AAP’s 92 MLAs are preparing to jump ship.

The 60% Claim: Sushil Rinku Predicts Imminent Split

Former MP and current BJP leader Sushil Kumar Rinku has fuelled speculation of a total collapse within the state unit. Rinku claimed that approximately 60 percent of AAP MLAs are currently in active communication with the BJP leadership.

Political analysts suggest that if these figures hold any weight, the Punjab government could face a formal split. Unlike past “Operation Lotus” allegations, the current defection of nearly the entire Rajya Sabha contingent has given these claims a new level of credibility, suggesting an internal rebellion that goes beyond mere rhetoric.

Congress Joins the Attack: “Ideology Overpowered by Influence”

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring launched a scathing broadside against the ruling party, asserting that the discontent is not limited to the upper house.

“It is not just the Rajya Sabha MPs; nearly 50 AAP MLAs are ready to leave the party,” Warring stated during a press briefing.

The Congress chief alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party has moved away from its founding principles, claiming that “money and influence” have replaced “ideology.” Warring further dismissed the importance of the defected Rajya Sabha members, labelling many of them as figures with “no grassroots influence” in Punjab, while emphasizing that their departure signals the beginning of the end for AAP’s dominance in the state.

Internal Turmoil and the Road Ahead

The continuous stream of allegations suggests a deep-rooted stability issue within the party. While AAP leadership has historically dismissed such claims as “political blackmail” by central agencies, the sheer scale of the Rajya Sabha defection has left the party’s rank and file in a state of shock.

Key Points of Tension:

  • The Anti-Defection Law: Rebels are reportedly eyeing a two-thirds split to bypass legal hurdles.

  • The “Agency” Factor: AAP continues to allege that the BJP is using central agencies to coerce their legislators.

  • Leadership Vacuum: With several top leaders now in the BJP fold, a perception of a leadership crisis is growing among the state cadre.

As discussions in political circles intensify, the coming days will be crucial for the Bhagwant Mann administration. Whether these claims are strategic psychological warfare or the groundwork for a major political realignment remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the “Aam Aadmi” fortress in Punjab is under its heaviest siege yet.
