Mohali Set to Become Semiconductor Hub: NXP Semiconductors Eyes R&D Centre in Punjab

MOHALI, PUNJAB — In a significant move aimed at bolstering the state’s technological landscape, the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has initiated high-level discussions with Netherlands-based global semiconductor giant NXP Semiconductors to establish a state-of-the-art Research and Development (R&D) centre in Mohali.

The potential investment marks a milestone in Punjab’s ongoing efforts to transition from traditional manufacturing toward high-tech industrial growth.

A Strategic Pivot Toward High-Tech

During a recent overseas investment summit, Chief Minister Mann, accompanied by Industries Minister Sanjeev Arora, met with NXP leadership to present Punjab as an ideal destination for semiconductor design and innovation. NXP, a world leader in secure connectivity and automotive electronics, currently operates two major facilities in India. Expanding into Mohali would solidify the region’s position as a burgeoning tech corridor.

“Our goal is to create an ecosystem that supports innovation,” Chief Minister Mann stated. “The establishment of an R&D centre by a global leader like NXP will not only provide high-value employment opportunities for our youth but will also place Punjab firmly on the global semiconductor map.”

Why Mohali?

The Punjab government is leveraging several key advantages to make this partnership a reality:

  • Robust Academic Pipeline: The region hosts prestigious institutions like IIT Ropar, ISB Mohali, and Plaksha University, which are essential for feeding the R&D centre with top-tier engineering talent.

  • Existing Semiconductor Infrastructure: Mohali is already home to the Government of India’s Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL), creating a unique cluster advantage for companies in the field.

  • “Thrust Sector” Incentives: Under the Industrial and Business Development Policy, the state has categorized electronics and semiconductor manufacturing as “thrust sectors,” offering customized incentives and a streamlined “ease-of-doing-business” framework.

Broadening Horizons: Education and Tech

Beyond the semiconductor sector, the state delegation’s foreign tour focused on a holistic approach to industrial development. The government is actively studying successful foreign models in education, aiming to align Punjab’s technical curriculum with the demands of the global electronics industry.

“We are not just looking for investment; we are looking for collaboration that fosters the modernization of our state,” Minister Sanjeev Arora added. “The discussions with NXP are part of a larger, deliberate push to pivot our industrial base toward modern domains.”

As the state awaits a formal commitment from NXP, government officials have extended an invitation for the company’s leadership to visit Mohali for an on-site feasibility study. For the youth of Punjab, the potential establishment of this centre represents a shift toward local, cutting-edge career paths that previously required relocation to tech hubs like Bangalore or overseas.
