ZIRAKPUR – In a move signalling a tougher stance against unauthorized urban expansion, the Zirakpur Municipal Council launched a targeted demolition drive today, razing an illegal building under construction in the KC Colony area of Dayalpura.
The operation, which utilized heavy machinery to dismantle the structure, comes as part of an intensified campaign by the local administration to curb a growing trend of rule violations by builders across the city.

A Systemic Challenge
Municipal officials have expressed grave concern over the increasing number of illegal developments that threaten the city’s master plan. According to official statements, several builders in the city are allegedly encroaching upon land reserved for public infrastructure.
The lands being illegally partitioned and sold as residential plots or commercial spaces include areas designated for:
-
Public Parks
-
Green Belts
-
Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)
“The conversion of reserved public land into private plots not only compromises urban planning but directly denies future residents access to basic amenities,” an official from the Municipal Council stated.
Repeated Warnings Ignored
The demolition in KC Colony was not a snap decision. Officials confirmed that the property owner had been issued multiple formal notices to halt construction. Despite these warnings, the builder continued to defy municipal regulations, ultimately forcing the Council to take direct action.
A Clear Warning to Developers
The administration has issued a stern warning to the builder community: any construction failing to adhere to sanctioned plans or encroaching on reserved land will face immediate consequences.
“We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal construction,” the official added. “We will continue to investigate such cases, and those found violating the law will face both the demolition of their structures and subsequent legal action.”

Community Reaction
The Council’s intervention has triggered a mixed response. While the move has caused significant agitation among developers involved in unauthorized projects, the local residents of Zirakpur have largely welcomed the action.
Many residents have stepped forward to voice their support, urging the Municipal Council to maintain the momentum and expand the crackdown to other areas where similar illegal activities are suspected to be underway. The Council has assured the public that these investigations will continue in the coming days.
