Social Media Obsession Leads to ₹8 Lakh Vandalism at Jaito School; Minors Identified

JAITO, FARIDKOT – A disturbing trend of social media obsession has culminated in a severe act of vandalism at the Government School of Eminence in Jaito. Three minors, seeking to film content for social media, allegedly broke into the school premises during the ongoing summer vacation, resulting in property damage estimated at ₹8 lakh.

A Calculated Breach

According to school authorities, the incident occurred when the three individuals scaled the school’s boundary wall to gain unauthorized access. Once inside the campus, the group allegedly engaged in a spree of destruction. The list of damaged property is extensive, including:

  • Security Infrastructure: CCTV cameras installed on the premises were deliberately damaged.

  • Infrastructure: Numerous windowpanes and classroom furniture were smashed.

  • Aesthetics: School flowerpots were destroyed.

  • Vehicles: Several vans parked on the school grounds were also targeted.

Identification and Police Intervention

The school administration discovered the destruction and immediately reviewed the security footage. The CCTV recordings provided clear evidence of the intruders’ actions, leading to the rapid identification of all three suspects.

School Principal Darshan Singh confirmed that the incident has been formally reported to the local police and the Education Department. Investigations revealed that the group consisted of one student who recently passed Class 10 and is set to enter Class 11, one student currently in Class 9, and one individual from outside the school.

DSP Iqbal Singh Sandhu confirmed that because all three suspects are minors, the police are handling the case with the necessary legal protocols. “The parents of all three minors have been summoned,” DSP Sandhu stated. “A thorough investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken based on our findings.”

A Growing Societal Concern

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting calls for greater awareness regarding the dangers of “reels culture.”

Dr. Harish Chandra, former Municipal Council President, expressed deep concern over the incident. He issued a stern appeal to the youth, urging them to exercise restraint and responsibility. “Young people must understand that the pursuit of likes and viral fame is not worth destroying one’s future or causing such immense damage to public institutions,” he remarked.

As the investigation continues, the event serves as a sobering reminder of the need for heightened parental supervision and educational efforts aimed at curbing the reckless behaviour often fuelled by the pressure of social media trends.
