BARNALA, PUNJAB – A pall of gloom has descended upon Radha Rani Colony in Barnala following the tragic death of 22-year-old Agniveer soldier Jaspreet Singh. The young recruit, who had been undergoing training at an Army centre in Fatehgarh, Uttar Pradesh, passed away suddenly, leaving his family and the local community in a state of profound shock.

A Legacy of Service
Jaspreet Singh hailed from a family deeply committed to the nation’s defence. His father, Boota Singh, served in the Indian Army for 19 years, and his elder brother, Arshdeep Singh, is currently an active-duty soldier. Inspired by this legacy, Jaspreet had enlisted as an Agniveer roughly 18 months ago, shortly after completing his 12th-grade education.
The Tragic Incident
The family was alerted to the tragedy by Army officials. According to preliminary information shared by his father, Boota Singh, and brother, Arshdeep, the young soldier reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in rigorous training exercises.
As of now, the Indian Army has not released an official statement or the final medical report regarding the exact cause of death. Family members and local community representatives emphasize that full clarity will only emerge once these official documents are provided.
The Family’s Plea
In the wake of this loss, the family—supported by residents of Barnala and local ex-servicemen organizations—is fervently demanding that Jaspreet be granted the official status of a martyr.
For his mother, Charanjit Kaur, the loss is inconsolable. “No mother should ever have to part with her son in such a way,” she stated, reflecting the grief felt by the entire neighborhood. Leaders from various political, religious, and social organizations have visited the family home to share in their mourning and support their call for recognition of his sacrifice.

Final Honours
Today, the local community and the Army contingent are set to pay their final respects. Jaspreet Singh will be honoured with a ceremonial salute, conducted in accordance with both religious customs and military traditions.
As the community stands in solidarity with the family, the case serves as a sombre reminder of the risks faced by those in uniform, even during the training phase of their service. Further updates are expected once the official military report is made available to the family.
