Sikh scholar Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha had prepared a Mahan Kosh containing the meanings of about 80 thousand words of Punjabi in 1930. Which was reprinted by Punjabi University a few years ago. But many mistakes were made during printing.

Protests have started in Punjabi University, Patiala, against the destruction of copies of Mahan Kosh by burying them in the soil. On Thursday, students got angry after seeing five-foot pits dug in the university and copies of Mahan Kosh thrown in them and they started protesting against the university administration.
An inquiry committee has been formed by Shri Akal Takht in this matter.
Student leaders Yadvinder Singh Yadu and others present on the spot alleged that the university administration is preparing to bury Mahan Kosh in the soil. This is outright sacrilege. Seeing the matter getting serious, the university officials and police reached the spot and tried to calm the atmosphere by convincing the students. But the students are adamant.
It is worth mentioning that Punjabi University had recently held a meeting with the Speaker of Punjab Assembly Kultar Singh Sandhwan regarding Mahan Kosh. If there are errors in Mahan Kosh, the university had assured to destroy it within 15 days.

Student leaders said that the verses of Shri Guru Granth Sahib are also recorded in this Mahan Kosh. Therefore, this method of destroying the copies of Mahan Kosh is not right. Therefore, it will be strongly opposed.
