Punjab: ASI and Head Constable Held for Accepting ₹2.5 Lakh Bribe, Released Drug Trafficker

Amritsar, October 15:
The image of the Punjab Police has once again come under scrutiny after two police personnel were caught accepting a bribe to release a drug trafficker. The accused, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Narinder Singh and Head Constable Pargat Singh, have been arrested for allegedly taking a ₹2.5 lakh bribe in Amritsar.

According to officials, the two policemen had apprehended Kulbir Singh, a resident of Darshan Avenue, Amritsar, for possessing banned drugs and intoxicant capsules in the Chattiwind Police Station area. Instead of initiating legal action, the officers allegedly accepted ₹2.5 lakh from Shamsher Singh, Kulbir Singh’s son, and released the accused while keeping the seized contraband in their custody.

After receiving credible information about the misconduct, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh ordered an immediate investigation. Acting swiftly, a special police team arrested both officers along with Kulbir Singh. A case has been registered against them at the Chattiwind Police Station under relevant sections of law.

SSP Maninder Singh said that the Punjab Police maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, asserting that no police official involved in unethical activities will be spared. He further added that under the leadership of DGP Gaurav Yadav, the force is fully committed to eliminating the menace of drugs from society and ensuring transparency and accountability within the police department.
