Punjab: ASI on Duty at DIG’s Residence in Ludhiana Commits Suicide; Children Live in Canada

Ludhiana, October 15:
A shocking incident has come to light from Ludhiana, where an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police allegedly committed suicide while on duty at the residence of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Ludhiana Range.

The deceased officer has been identified as ASI Tirth Singh (50), a resident of Mullanpur Dakha. He had been posted at the DIG House on Rani Jhansi Road for the past four to five years and was serving as a miscellaneous storekeeper.

According to the police, the incident took place around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, when Tirth Singh, who was on night duty, allegedly shot himself in the head with his service revolver. Hearing the gunshot, other police personnel stationed at the residence rushed to the spot and found him lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Upon receiving the information, senior police officials, along with personnel from Division No. 8 Police Station, reached the scene and began an investigation. The police have taken possession of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.

Family and Background

Sources revealed that ASI Tirth Singh had three children, all residing in Canada. He had been a disciplined and dedicated officer throughout his service. His colleagues were reportedly shocked by the incident, describing him as a quiet and sincere policeman who rarely shared personal issues.

Police Investigation Underway

ACP Civil Lines Gurikbal Singh said that the cause behind the suicide remains unclear. “We are recording statements from the family and colleagues to ascertain the possible reasons behind the incident,” he said.

The police have also initiated inquiries into whether the ASI had been under any personal, financial, or professional stress prior to taking the extreme step.
