Delhi-NCR has turned into a gas chamber once again. A toxic cloud of smog has blanketed the capital, pushing millions to the edge of a public health collapse. Hospitals are packed, OPDs are overflowing, and citizens are gasping for air as the government looks on helplessly.

According to a massive Local Circles survey of over 15,000 residents, 75% of Delhi-NCR households have at least one member suffering from COVID-like symptoms — cough, fever, sore throat, or breathlessness. Every second home is now a mini hospital.
Air So Toxic, It’s Making People Sick Overnight
Doctors across Delhi warn: this isn’t smog — it’s slow poison.
Complaints of breathing difficulty, wheezing, burning eyes, and chest congestion have exploded in the last two weeks. Even those with no prior illnesses are now gasping for air.
“Children are coughing all night, elderly patients can’t step out, and even healthy adults are landing in emergency wards,” said a senior AIIMS paediatrician. “This air is destroying lungs — silently, every hour.”
Children Under Siege
The youngest and oldest are being hit the hardest. Hospitals have opened special respiratory wards as cases of asthma, bronchitis, and allergic attacks skyrocket.
-
42% of residents report nonstop cough and sore throats.
-
25% struggle with headaches, eye burning, and sleeplessness.
-
17% are battling breathlessness and asthma-like symptoms.
“Children under five are being smothered by pollution,” said a doctor. “We’ve seen a 30–40% spike in bronchitis and wheezing attacks since the smog rolled in.”
Post-Diwali Disaster
The situation nosedived after Diwali — the air quality index (AQI) shot past the “hazardous” mark. A lung specialist in Saket said 100% of patients arriving after Diwali reported worsened symptoms.
“The festival smoke was the final nail,” he said. “Now, even those who exercise daily or don’t smoke are complaining of suffocation. This isn’t just pollution — it’s mass poisoning in slow motion.”
Hospitals Overrun, Recovery Slowed
At Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, OPDs are overflowing with patients gasping for air. Cases of asthma attacks, COPD, and chest infections have jumped over 30% compared to last year.
Doctors say pollution is now slowing recovery itself — colds, fevers, and coughs that once healed in days are dragging on for weeks. “The body can’t fight back when every breath is toxic,” a physician said grimly.
Citizens Furious: ‘Where Is the Action?’
As Delhi suffocates, citizens are furious. Doctors, activists, and residents have demanded immediate enforcement of GRAP, a total ban on stubble burning, and round-the-clock smog guns and road cleaning.
But for now, Delhi-NCR has been left to fight the air on its own — armed with masks, purifiers, and prayers.
“People are not breathing air anymore,” said a pulmonologist. “They’re inhaling chemicals.”
The Bottom Line
Delhi-NCR stands at the edge of a public health catastrophe.
Children can’t breathe. The elderly can’t step outside. Hospitals are drowning in patients. And unless authorities act now, this winter could turn deadlier than COVID.
