Phagwara, November 19, 2025 – A violent attack on senior Shiv Sena leader Inderjit Karawal and his son Jimmy Karawal has sparked outrage and led to calls for a complete shutdown of Phagwara on Wednesday.

The Attack
The incident occurred late Tuesday evening in Gaushala Bazaar when approximately six armed assailants on motorcycles ambushed the Karawals with sharp-edged weapons. Jimmy Karawal was surrounded and attacked first due to what authorities describe as an old rivalry. When his father, Inderjit Karawal, who serves as Shiv Sena Punjab state vice-president, rushed to his son’s defense, he too was injured in the assault. The attackers reportedly fired gunshots into the air before fleeing the scene.
Jimmy Karawal sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to Phagwara Civil Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. His father also received medical attention for injuries sustained during the attack.
Police Response
Superintendent of Police Madhavi Sharma addressed the situation Tuesday night, announcing that the perpetrators have been identified and will be arrested soon. “Strict action will be taken against those responsible,” SP Sharma stated, appealing to Hindu leaders to maintain peace and allow law enforcement to handle the matter.
Police forces have been placed on high alert, and a search operation is underway to track down the culprits. Authorities suspect the attack may be linked to longstanding personal enmity.
Community Reaction
The attack has triggered widespread anger among religious, social, and political organizations in Phagwara. Leaders from various groups flocked to the Civil Hospital late into the night to show support for the Karawals, prompting additional police deployment to maintain order.
Accusing the police of negligence, these leaders have announced an indefinite shutdown of Phagwara starting Wednesday morning. Hindu leaders have urged residents and shopkeepers to close their establishments and gather at Gaushala Bazaar at 10 a.m.
Among those expressing outrage over the incident are Nihang Singh Baba Bittu, Phagwara MLA and District Congress Committee President Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, BJP leader Ashu Sampla, Shiv Sena Akhand Bharat and Vishwa Hindu Sangh National President Ajay Mehta, Shiv Sena UBT State Press Secretary Kamal Saroj, Bajrang Dal leader Harsh Bhalla, and representatives from several Hindu organizations.
Many leaders have vowed to handle the situation themselves, describing the atmosphere as one of growing lawlessness in the region.

Current Situation
As of Wednesday morning, it remains uncertain whether SP Sharma’s assurances will calm the anger of community leaders or whether tensions will continue to escalate. The shutdown call has raised concerns about public safety and the potential for further unrest in Phagwara.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they work to apprehend the suspects and restore peace to the area.
