Chandigarh MBA Student Murder Case: After 15 Years, Accused Monu Convicted of Rape and Murder; Sentencing on Friday

Chandigarh — In a significant development in one of Chandigarh’s longest-running criminal cases, the District Court on Thursday convicted Monu Kumar for the rape and murder of a 21-year-old MBA student, whose brutal killing in 2010 had shocked the city. The court will pronounce the sentence on Friday.

According to the prosecution, the victim’s body was found in Chandigarh’s Sector 38 in 2010. A post-mortem confirmed that she had been raped before being murdered. Despite extensive investigations, police were unable to identify the culprit for several years, leaving the case unsolved and the victim’s family without closure.

The breakthrough came last year when police arrested Monu Kumar, a resident of Shahpur Colony near Dadumajra. Investigators stated that Monu had managed to evade arrest for nearly 14 years. Further investigations revealed his suspected involvement in the murders of two other women, cases which are also being heard in the District Court.

The final arguments in the case concluded on November 20, and the verdict was originally scheduled for November 26. However, the hearing was postponed on Wednesday after police failed to produce the accused in court due to heavy deployment for the farmers’ mahapanchayat and protests at Punjab University.

On Thursday, the court finally delivered its judgment, holding Monu guilty of rape and murder. The order on his sentencing has been reserved, with the court set to announce the punishment on Friday.

The conviction marks a crucial step toward justice in a case that has remained unresolved for 15 years and has been closely followed by the public and legal community.
