Police Deny Gang War Despite Large-Scale Violence; Six Arrested as Investigation Intensifies
Ludhiana — What should have been a joyous occasion turned into a bloodbath Saturday night when a shooting at Bath Castle Marriage Palace on Pakhowal Road left two people dead and the city shaken by one of its worst incidents of armed violence at a public event.
Approximately 50 bullets were exchanged between two rival groups during the wedding ceremony, transforming the venue into a war zone within minutes. In addition to the two fatalities—including a woman—another guest sustained injuries. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of absolute chaos as armed men entered the hall, sparking gunfire from both sides that sent terrified guests scrambling for safety.

From Celebration to Carnage
The shooting erupted suddenly as the wedding procession moved toward the stage. Groom Varinder Kapoor recounted the harrowing moments, saying he was leading the procession when gunfire suddenly broke out. He took cover under the stage to escape the crossfire. Eyewitnesses described continuous rounds of firing from both sides, with several guests narrowly avoiding bullets as glass and furniture shattered around them.
Within the chaos, the wedding ceremony was brought to an abrupt halt. The marriage was subsequently completed at a nearby temple with the family’s consent, allowing the couple to complete their union despite the violence that had marred what should have been their special day.
Police Arrive Within 20 Minutes
Police arrived at the scene within 20 minutes of the initial shots being fired. Officers swiftly evacuated the marriage palace and sealed the entire venue as a crime scene. The rapid response prevented further escalation and allowed for the initial investigation to begin.
Official Response: Local Rivalry, Not Gang War
Despite the scale and organized nature of the violence, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma stated that the incident represents a battle for supremacy between local groups rather than an organized gang war. According to the Commissioner, the two groups involved have a well-documented history of clashes. A previous gunfire incident occurred between them at Subhani Building Chowk in the old city, indicating this is part of an ongoing territorial dispute.
“This is not an organized gang war,” Commissioner Sharma clarified, emphasizing instead that local youth with a history of rivalry were responsible for the shooting. The Commissioner explained that groom Varinder Kapoor had invited friends Shubham Mota and Ankur to the wedding. The pre-existing tensions between their respective groups escalated into a violent confrontation during the ceremony.
Swift Action and Arrests
Police have arrested six accused individuals so far in connection with the incident. Formal charges have been filed against seven named suspects and eleven unidentified individuals under sections covering murder, attempt to murder, and violations of the Arms Act.
The investigation revealed that several of the accused possessed licensed weapons at the time of their arrest. Police Commissioner Sharma announced that the department will initiate proceedings to cancel the gun licenses of all individuals found to be carrying weapons during the incident.
Beyond the shooters, action has also been taken against the groom and the marriage palace management for the serious security lapse of allowing weapons inside the venue. This breach represents a significant failure in event security protocols that will be further scrutinized as the investigation continues.
Licensed or Illegal? Investigation Underway
A key focus of the ongoing investigation is determining whether the weapons used in the shooting were legally licensed or obtained illegally. Police are also working to recover and identify all firearms used during the incident and trace their origins.
Commissioner Swapan Sharma indicated that multiple aspects of the case are under investigation and that a major breakthrough is expected soon. The police are exploring various investigative angles to build a comprehensive case against all those involved.
Questions About Weapon Control
The incident has raised serious concerns about weapon control and security at public event venues across Ludhiana. The fact that armed individuals were able to enter a crowded marriage palace with firearms highlights potential gaps in security screening at such venues. Questions are being raised about how multiple weapons entered the venue undetected and what measures should be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Toll of Violence
Two lives were claimed in the shooting, and another person was injured. The psychological impact on the hundreds of wedding guests who witnessed the violence will likely be enduring. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the risks posed by unchecked rivalries and easy access to firearms in densely populated urban areas.
Status Update: The investigation is ongoing. Police have committed to providing further updates as the case develops. Citizens with any information related to the incident are urged to come forward and assist law enforcement.
