AAP Dominates Punjab Local Elections, Securing 50% of Seats in Historic Mandate

Vote counting underway across Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections; final results expected Thursday

Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decisively claimed victory in the state’s Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections, securing approximately half of all contested seats in a sweeping display of electoral dominance. Vote counting, which began Wednesday across 154 polling centres, is continuing throughout the day with final results expected by Thursday afternoon.

AAP Surges to Clear Victory

Vote tallies from Wednesday evening reveal the extent of the AAP’s commanding lead. Out of 2,838 total Panchayat Samiti seats, the AAP captured 1,033, leaving Congress with 273 seats, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) with 176, the BJP with just 27, and independent candidates accounting for the remaining 67 seats.

The performance was similarly dominant in the Zila Parishad races, where AAP won 68 of 347 available seats, compared to Congress’s 13, SAD’s 2, and the BJP’s single seat.

Across all contested zones—8,098 candidates for Panchayat Samiti positions and 1,249 for Zila Parishad seats—the ruling party has decisively outpaced its rivals, translating grassroots organization into tangible electoral gains.

Mixed Results for Opposition Parties

While the Congress mounted competitive challenges in several regions and the Akali Dal registered stronger performance than in previous local elections, both parties fell substantially short of the AAP’s widespread support. The BJP’s minimal showing reflects its continued struggle to gain traction in Punjab’s political landscape.

The results delivered particularly notable outcomes in several high-profile constituencies. In Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s ancestral village of Satoj, AAP candidate Harwinder Pal Rishi secured victory in the Dharamgarh zone Block Samiti election. However, the party experienced notable defeats in other politically significant locations, including the ancestral village of AAP MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaaj in Sangrur and Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan’s village, signaling that AAP’s victory, while substantial, was not uniformly comprehensive.

In Ubhawal—the ancestral village of former Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa—a SAD-supported independent candidate, Shinderpal Singh, secured victory.

AAP Credits Grassroots Organization

Aman Arora, President of AAP Punjab, framed the results as validation of the state government’s governance model. “By giving the party a massive mandate in the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections, the people of Punjab have expressed their faith in the governance and policies of the AAP government,” Arora stated. He attributed the victory to the dedication of party workers at the grassroots level, noting that AAP candidates are leading in 867 Panchayat Samiti zones.

Opposition Raises Electoral Fraud Allegations

The decisive victory, however, has sparked significant controversy, with opposition parties alleging electoral irregularities and misuse of government machinery.

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, President of the Punjab Congress, acknowledged Congress’s competitive showing but contended that the playing field was fundamentally unequal. “The Aam Aadmi Party left no stone unturned to influence the elections. Government machinery was misused,” Warring stated, claiming that ruling party members prevented opposition candidates from filing nominations and threatened candidates seeking to contest.

Despite these challenges, Warring asserted that Congress’s performance was respectable given the circumstances, and predicted a reversal of fortunes in upcoming assembly elections. “The real contest will be in the assembly elections, where the people of Punjab will oust the AAP from power,” he declared.

The BJP’s Punjab spokesperson, Pritpal Singh Baliwal, similarly contested the results’ legitimacy, alleging systematic manipulation. “The government rigged the elections, and the people will give their answer in 2027,” Baliwal stated, referencing the next scheduled assembly elections. He pointed to procedural irregularities, claiming that “candidates’ signatures weren’t even obtained before the results were declared.”

During vote counting, SAD representatives alleged that winning SAD candidates had been illegally defeated through coordinated conspiracy, while AAP demanded recounts in specific seats following unexpected losses.

Road Ahead

As vote counting continues, these local elections have provided early indicators of relative party strength ahead of Punjab’s next general assembly elections. The substantial mandate awarded to the AAP suggests robust support for the incumbent government at the local level, while opposition parties’ protests signal contentious ground realities and potential disputes that may emerge as final tallies are compiled.

Final official results are expected to clarify the full scope of the electoral outcome by Thursday afternoon.
