A religious procession organized by New Zealand’s Sikh community faced unexpected disruption on Saturday as local protesters blocked its route, sparking condemnation from Indian officials and community leaders.

The Incident
South Auckland witnessed an unusual confrontation on Saturday when approximately 30 to 35 local protesters halted a Sikh Nagar Kirtan—a traditional religious procession—and staged a demonstration against the event. The procession, which had originated from Gurdwara Nanaksar Thath Ishar Darbar, was in the process of returning to its starting point when the protesters intervened.
The demonstrators carried signs reading “This is New Zealand, not India” and “This is our land, let us live,” expressing concerns about immigration and cultural identity. According to reports, the protesters were associated with Apostle Bishop Brian Tamaki, leader of a Pentecostal church. During the blockade, they chanted slogans and performed the Haka, a traditional Māori ceremonial dance.
New Zealand police responded swiftly to the situation. Officers arrived at the scene, mediated between the two groups, and removed the protesters from the road. The Sikh community demonstrated remarkable restraint throughout the incident, and police successfully restored order, allowing the Nagar Kirtan to complete its route and return to the Gurdwara.
Community Response
Members of the Sikh community expressed confusion about the protest, noting the absence of clear communication or stated grievances from the demonstrators. The community’s composed reaction during the confrontation was notable, with participants maintaining their commitment to the religious observance despite the disruption.
Government and Official Condemnation
The incident drew swift criticism from Indian government officials and major Sikh organizations. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann issued a statement expressing concern about the protest, emphasizing that religious freedom is a fundamental right in democratic societies.
“Every individual has the right to practice and propagate their religion,” Mann stated. “New Zealand is a developed country, and such an incident had never been witnessed there before.”
The Chief Minister characterized the protest as part of a broader global trend of rising anti-immigration sentiment. He appealed to India’s central government to formally engage with New Zealand authorities regarding the matter, urging them to send a strong message about protecting religious minorities.
Mann further noted that people of Indian origin make significant contributions to New Zealand’s development and economy. “Such protests against them harm the image of the entire community,” he said, emphasizing that Indian citizens abroad are “examples of peace and harmony.”
Religious Community’s Position
Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)—a principal Sikh religious organization—also condemned the incident. Dhami characterized the opposition to the Nagar Kirtan as a direct attack on sacred Sikh traditions.
“The foundation of Sikhism rests on brotherhood, humanity, and peace,” Dhami stated. He appealed to both the New Zealand and Indian governments to take appropriate action to ensure the Sikh community can practice their religious rights in a safe environment.
Dhami emphasized the spiritual significance of the Nagar Kirtan, describing it as an important religious tradition that conveys a message of “mutual harmony, love, and unity in society.” He stressed that opposing such events contradicts the universal teachings of the Sikh Gurus.
Broader Context
The incident reflects ongoing tensions in New Zealand regarding immigration, cultural integration, and religious expression. It also highlights the complex interplay between minority religious communities and segments of the local population that have expressed concerns about demographic and cultural change.
The involvement of a specific religious group’s followers suggests potential sectarian dimensions to the protest, though the exact motivations of the protesters remain unclear.

Conclusion
Despite the disruption, the swift intervention by New Zealand police and the restraint shown by the Sikh community prevented the situation from escalating into a larger conflict. The incident has drawn international attention, with Indian officials now monitoring the matter and calling for assurances that religious minorities in New Zealand will be afforded proper protection and freedom to observe their traditions.
