Jalandhar Youth Trapped in Pakistan, Faces Legal Battle; Family Pins Hopes on Advocate Bajwa

JALANDHAR A 23-year-old resident of Jalandhar has found himself ensnared in a legal crisis across the international border, sparking a battle for his freedom and repatriation. Sharandeep Singh, from Bhoypur village in Shahpur town, disappeared under mysterious circumstances on November 2nd, only for his family to discover weeks later that he was languishing in Pakistani custody.

A Disappearance Near the Border

Sharandeep vanished from the Rattoke village area near Khemkaran town, a region located precariously close to the India-Pakistan international border. The initial shock of his disappearance turned to horror when the family learned, on November 21st, that he had been arrested and was being held at Gandha Singh Wala police station in Kasur district, West Punjab.

According to his father, Satnam Singh, the young man had struggled with drug addiction and had been in contact with relatives living abroad, circumstances that may have contributed to his decision to attempt border crossing.

Arrested by Pakistan Rangers

Sharandeep was apprehended by the Pakistan Rangers—the country’s paramilitary border security force—and subsequently handed over to the Kasur district police. He has been booked under serious charges, including illegally crossing the international border and related offenses that carry substantial legal consequences under Pakistani law.

A Lifeline Emerges

What began as a seemingly hopeless situation has taken a turn for the better with the intervention of unexpected allies. Pakistani social media vlogger Nasir Dhillon became aware of Sharandeep’s plight through his American friend Bobby Sidhu, who learned about the arrest while living in the United States.

Moved by the family’s desperation, Dhillon reached out to senior advocate Bahram Bajwa of a prominent Pakistani law firm. Bajwa, recognizing the gravity of the situation, has stepped forward to champion Sharandeep’s case pro bono, assuring the family that he will mount a comprehensive legal defence aimed at securing the young man’s release and repatriation to India.

The Road Ahead

The involvement of advocate Bajwa has provided the Singh family with renewed hope. The legal team is actively preparing arguments for Sharandeep’s case, focusing on the circumstances of his arrest and the prospects of his return to his homeland. The family remains optimistic that through sustained legal effort and advocacy, their son will be brought back to India safely.

Broader Concerns

Sharandeep Singh’s case has transcended the personal tragedy of one family to become a matter of national and international significance. It has reignited discussions about border security between India and Pakistan, the vulnerability of citizens living in frontier regions, and the particular risks faced by young people struggling with addiction near sensitive international boundaries.

Civil society and community members in Jalandhar continue to monitor developments in the case, hoping that advocate Bajwa’s intervention will yield positive results. The family has appealed to both Indian and Pakistani authorities to facilitate Sharandeep’s safe passage back home.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the Singh family and their supporters remain committed to bringing Sharandeep back to India, determined that this young man will have a second chance at life.
