Amritsar Police Apprehend Accused After Brief Encounter; Pistol Recovered
Amritsar Rural Police have successfully arrested the main accused in the high-profile Lucky Oberoi murder case following a brief encounter in the Khasa area of Amritsar. The arrested suspect, identified as Shaminder Singh, a resident of Mithapur, Jalandhar, was apprehended after he allegedly opened fire on police personnel while attempting to flee. A Beretta .30 bore pistol was recovered from the accused.

The Crime
Satwinderpal Singh, widely known as Lucky Oberoi, was shot dead on Friday morning in the parking lot of Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Model Town, Jalandhar. The victim was targeted by unidentified assailants riding a white Activa scooter while he was returning home after offering prayers. The sudden and brazen nature of the attack sparked an immediate investigation by law enforcement agencies.
Swift Police Action
Following the incident, Amritsar Rural Police launched a comprehensive investigation with support from the Border Range Police. Acting on reliable intelligence that Shaminder Singh had fled to the Khasa area to evade arrest, police established checkpoints in surrounding areas and intensified their search operations.
“When police spotted the accused approaching on a motorcycle, we immediately signalled him to stop,” said Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Suhail Qasim Mir. “However, the accused panicked and attempted to turn his motorcycle around.”
Brief Encounter and Arrest
The encounter quickly turned tense when Shaminder Singh lost control of his motorcycle and fell during his escape attempt. According to police accounts, the accused then opened fire indiscriminately on the police party. Officers returned fire in self-defence, and during the exchange of gunfire, Shaminder sustained a gunshot wound. He was subsequently arrested and taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
“A Beretta .30 bore pistol was recovered from the accused,” confirmed Deputy Inspector General of Police Border Range Sandeep Goyal. “The weapon will be subject to forensic analysis to establish its connection to the murder.”
Criminal Background
Shaminder Singh has an existing criminal record, according to police records. This background makes the arrest particularly significant in the investigation into the Lucky Oberoi murder case.
Ongoing Investigation
During preliminary interrogation, Shaminder Singh made important revelations regarding the involvement of another person in the Lucky Oberoi murder case. These disclosures have opened new leads for investigators, and police are currently conducting further raids and operations to apprehend the remaining accused.
“The interrogation has been valuable in expanding the scope of our investigation,” SSP Mir stated. “We are actively pursuing additional suspects to ensure all individuals responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice.”
Legal Proceedings
An FIR (First Information Report) has been registered at Jalandhar Commissionerate Police Station, Division 6, under sections 103(1), 3(5), and 61(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. These charges relate to murder and illegal possession of firearms.
The case, registered on February 6, 2026 (FIR No. 25), marks a significant development in efforts to bring those responsible for Lucky Oberoi’s death to justice. Police have assured the public that their investigation remains thorough and ongoing.
