Sangrur legislator Narinder Kaur Bharaj claims she was offered BJP ticket and full support of demands; BJP dismisses allegations as false and politically motivated

A political firestorm erupted in Punjab on Thursday when Aam Aadmi Party MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj publicly alleged that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini attempted to lure her into the Bharatiya Janata Party, claiming the offer was part of a broader strategy to destabilize elected AAP governments across the country. The allegation represents the latest flashpoint in an ongoing rivalry between the two parties over legislative defections and governmental stability in the region.
At a press conference, Bharaj, who represents the Sangrur constituency, stated that Saini offered her a BJP ticket and assured her that all her political demands would be fulfilled if she switched parties. The Haryana Chief Minister’s overtures, she claimed, were representative of what the AAP characterizes as “Operation Lotus”—a term the party uses to describe alleged coordinated efforts by the BJP to destabilize governments through legislative realignment.
“The BJP is trying to topple elected governments across the country. I want to make it clear that the Aam Aadmi Party is united and fully prepared for the 2027 elections. CM Saini should stop worrying about me and focus on his own state.” – Narinder Kaur Bharaj
Party Solidarity Statement
In a show of support for Bharaj, Baltej Pannu, the AAP’s Punjab State Media Incharge, launched a strong counteroffensive against the BJP at the same press conference. Pannu accused the BJP of attempting to systematically weaken democratic institutions in Punjab through legislative poaching and questioned the party’s commitment to democratic principles.
“The AAP has consistently demonstrated that our MLAs are not for sale. The party had previously thwarted similar poaching attempts. Our organizational strength and ideological commitment ensure the loyalty of our legislative contingent,” Pannu stated.
BJP’s Categorical Denial
The Bharatiya Janata Party swiftly and comprehensively rejected Bharaj’s allegations. Praveen Atre, the media secretary of the Haryana Chief Minister’s office, dismissed the claims as baseless and suggested they were fabricated to divert public attention from governance failures in Punjab.
“Chief Minister Saini doesn’t even know which constituency this MLA represents. The Aam Aadmi Party is making false allegations whenever it is exposed for its poor handling of law and order, its completely failed policies on the drug issue, and its deteriorating economic situation,” Atre stated.
Demand for Evidence
Ashwani Sharma, the Punjab BJP Working President, offered perhaps the most pointed response, directly challenging Bharaj to produce substantive evidence or issue a public apology. Sharma characterized the allegation as another instance of the AAP resorting to political theatre whenever its governance record came under scrutiny.
“Whenever the AAP government is scared, it creates a new drama. Whenever it is exposed for poor law and order, failed drug policies, and deteriorating economy, it launches Operation Lotus allegations,” Sharma said.
Sharma pressed Bharaj to provide concrete documentation. “If you have the actual facts, make them public. Who met you, when, what was offered. Put everything out there. Otherwise, stop misleading the people and apologize,” he demanded.

Broader Political Context
The exchange reflects the intensifying struggle between the AAP and BJP over political dominance in Punjab. The AAP, which came to power in the 2022 state elections, faces the 2027 elections amid questions about governance effectiveness. The BJP, currently in opposition in Punjab, has made significant gains in recent national elections and has emerged as a formidable political force in neighboring Haryana.
Both parties have recognized that legislative defections remain a potent political weapon. The AAP claims to represent a new model of ethical politics based on ideological commitment, while critics argue the BJP has built its strategy around converting opposition legislators to its fold.
The allegations and countercharges are likely to escalate tensions in the region as both parties prepare for the upcoming 2027 state elections, a crucial political battleground in India’s competitive federal system.
