Security Alert: Smugglers Exploit Smart Meter SIMs for Cross-Border Drone Drops in Punjab

FEROZEPUR – A sophisticated and dangerous new modus operandi has emerged along the Indo-Pak border, where smuggling networks are now weaponizing digital infrastructure. Intelligence agencies have gone on high alert following reports that SIM cards are being stolen from smart electricity meters in border villages to facilitate the smuggling of narcotics and weapons via drones.

The breach came to light in Tendi Wala, a village situated on the zero line in the Ferozepur sector. Local families discovered that unidentified individuals had tampered with their newly installed smart meters, extracting the embedded SIM cards. A formal complaint has been lodged with the power department, triggering a massive investigation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police.

The Modus Operandi: Digital Coordinates for Drones

Technicians and security officials explain that each smart meter contains a GSM module and a chip-based SIM card intended to transmit consumption data to a central control room. However, smugglers are repurposing this technology:

  1. Theft & Extraction: SIM cards are removed from the meters of households located near the border fencing.

  2. GPS Mapping: These SIMs are inserted into mobile phones to establish a secure, localized connection.

  3. Precision Dropping: Smugglers use the data connection to share precise GPS coordinates with handlers in Pakistan.

  4. Drone Navigation: Pakistani smugglers then program drones to fly to those exact coordinates, dropping consignments of heroin and illegal arms deep within Indian territory, effectively bypassing the physical barrier of the border fence.

National Security & Cyber Threats

Beyond smuggling, officials from Powercom have raised alarms regarding a potential “grid-level” threat. Experts warn that if these SIM cards are used to breach the central management system, anti-social elements could potentially disrupt the power supply across entire districts, leading to large-scale civil unrest or masking other criminal activities.

“This matter has come to my attention. Inputs regarding this issue have been sought from the BSF and other security agencies. Once these inputs are received, the investigation will be advanced, and appropriate action will be taken.” Gaurav Yadav, DGP, Punjab.

Evolution of Smuggling Tactics

Security agencies noted that while smugglers previously relied on crude methods—such as hiding contraband in bullock cart tires, hollow pipes, or lassi bottles—the shift toward drone technology and digital exploitation represents a “tectonic shift” in narco-terrorism.

Current Security Measures:

  • BSF Vigilance: Increased patrolling and electronic surveillance in border villages.

  • Technical Audit: Powercom is reviewing the physical security of smart meters to prevent easy SIM extraction.

  • Public Awareness: Residents in border districts are being urged to report any communication failure in their meters immediately.

The Punjab government is currently in the process of replacing traditional meters with these prepaid smart systems across the state. This incident has now forced a re-evaluation of the rollout’s security protocols to ensure that technological progress does not come at the cost of national safety.
