PATIALA/RAJPURA — A high-intensity explosion ripped through the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFCCIL) late Monday night between Rajpura and Shambhu, leaving one man dead and sparking a massive multi-agency terror probe.

The incident, which occurred near Bathonia village, has sent security agencies into a frenzy as it marks the second targeted attack on the high-value freight infrastructure in Punjab within three months.

The Incident: Premature Detonation Suspected

The blast occurred at approximately 9:00 PM on Monday. Preliminary forensic evidence suggests the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Investigators believe the deceased, identified as Jagroop Singh from Panjwar village in Tarn Taran, may have been handling or attempting to plant the device when it detonated prematurely. The force of the explosion was so severe that the victim’s body was blown to pieces, with remains scattered across the tracks.

Key Evidence Recovered

Despite the carnage, a mobile phone belonging to Singh was recovered intact at the scene. This device proved pivotal, allowing the Patiala Police and Railway Crime Branch to establish his identity within hours of the incident.

Security Grid on High Alert

The explosion caused immediate damage to a section of the railway track, forcing an indefinite halt to all freight traffic on the vital industrial artery.

SSP Patiala, Varun Sharma, confirmed that the area was immediately cordoned off. “The matter is being investigated from every possible angle. The actual cause behind the explosion will become clear only after the forensic report is received. For the time being, security arrangements have been tightened, and surveillance has been intensified,” Sharma stated.

The Terror Angle

With the victim hailing from Tarn Taran—a district often under the scanner for cross-border smuggling and radical activity—intelligence agencies are probing potential links to terror modules.

  • NIA Involvement: Sources indicate a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is expected to arrive at the site to take over the technical investigation.

  • Forensic Sweep: Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams from Mohali have collected soil and metal scrapings to determine the chemical composition of the explosive.

A Pattern of Sabotage

This latest blast has raised serious questions regarding the security of the DFCCIL, which is crucial for the movement of coal and essential goods across Northern India.

Date Location Impact
Jan 24, 2026 Mandi Gobindgarh – Sirhind Loco Pilot injured; engine damaged by IED.
April 24, 2026 Regional Alert Unconfirmed reports of a specific threat received.
April 27, 2026 Rajpura – Shambhu One dead (suspect); track damaged.

Vinod Kumar Bhatia, DRM Ambala Division, noted that the Railways are in constant communication with DFCCIL management. “We are gathering detailed information. Safety protocols for the entire division are being reviewed,” he said.

Current Situation

As of Tuesday morning, the track has been cleared of debris, though freight movement remains restricted as security sweeps continue along the Rajpura-Ambala stretch. Residents in nearby villages reported hearing a “deafening roar” that shook windows, underscoring the lethal potential of the device used.

The Punjab Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity near railway infrastructure as the investigation shifts toward identifying Singh’s handlers and the source of the explosives.
