SRI ANANDPUR SAHIB – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann officially launched a four-day state-wide ‘Shukrana Yatra’ (Tour of Thanksgiving) today, starting with a prayer for gratitude at the historic Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib.
The yatra follows the historic enactment of the ‘Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026,’ a legislative milestone aimed at curbing sacrilege and ensuring the highest level of respect for the holy scriptures. The Chief Minister described the journey as a spiritual and communal mission to thank the Almighty for the strength to fulfil a long-standing promise to the people of Punjab.

A Legislative Milestone
The 2026 Amendment Act, which serves as the catalyst for this tour, introduces some of the most stringent penalties in the country for acts of desecration. Key provisions include:
-
Life Imprisonment: Potential life sentences for sacrilege committed under criminal conspiracy.
-
Strict Accountability: Mandating the digital tracking and registration of all Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
-
Enhanced Policing: Specialized units dedicated to investigating religious crimes to ensure swift justice.
The Four-Day Blueprint
The Chief Minister’s itinerary is designed to cover the geographical and spiritual heartland of Punjab, passing through several historic Gurdwaras and connecting with the Sangat (congregation) at every stop.
Day 1: The Gateway of Khalsa
The journey began this morning at Sri Anandpur Sahib. After paying obeisance, the CM’s convoy moved through the Doaba region, stopping at Ropar, Balachaur, and Banga, before concluding the first leg in Phagwara.
Day 2: The Spiritual Corridor
On Thursday, the yatra will head toward the Majha region.
-
Key Stops: Jalandhar, Baba Bakala, and Amritsar, where the CM is expected to pay a high-profile visit to the Golden Temple.
-
Evening Route: The tour will continue through Tarn Taran, Zira, and Faridkot, ending the day in Kotkapura.
Day 3: The Malwa Heartland
The third day focuses on the southern districts, known for their deep-rooted political and religious significance.
-
Route: Bathinda, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo), Sardulgarh, Mansa, and Barnala.
-
Evening: The day concludes in Sunam, the CM’s ancestral region.
Day 4: The Grand Culmination
The final leg of the journey will pass through the political nerve centres of the state.
-
Route: Sangrur, Samana, and Patiala.
-
Final Stop: The yatra will reach its emotional conclusion on May 9 at Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, the site of the martyrdom of the Chhote Sahibzade.
The Political Pulse
Political analysts view the ‘Shukrana Yatra’ as a masterstroke in bridging the gap between governance and the deep-seated religious sentiments of the Punjabi electorate. By visiting all three Takhts within the state—Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Sri Damdama Sahib, and proximity to the Akal Takht—Mann is signaling a government that prioritizes the “Aan, Baan, and Shaan” (honor and pride) of the state’s heritage.
“This is not a political rally; it is a pilgrimage of gratitude,” a spokesperson for the Chief Minister’s Office stated. “The 2026 Act is a shield for our faith, and the Chief Minister wants to share this moment of justice with every citizen of Punjab.”
As the yatra moves forward, security has been tightened across all major districts to accommodate the massive crowds expected to join the congregations.
