MOHALI – A high-stakes raid by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took a cinematic turn on Thursday at the Western Towers Society in Kharar, Mohali. In a desperate attempt to dispose of evidence, a bag containing ₹21 lakh in cash was thrown from the ninth-floor balcony of an IT businessman’s apartment as officials closed in.
The incident triggered chaos within the residential complex as bundles of currency notes rained down, leading to a frantic chase and the eventual apprehension of a suspect.

The “Rain” of Cash
According to eyewitness accounts and official reports, the ED team arrived at the society early in the morning to conduct a search operation linked to an ongoing financial investigation. As the team began their procedure on the ninth floor, a double-layered bag—a red bag placed inside a white one—was seen plummeting from the balcony.
The impact of the fall from such a height caused the bags to burst upon hitting the ground, scattering bundles of ₹500 denomination notes across the society’s courtyard.
The Chase and Recovery
The drama intensified when a man, identified as a driver who was reportedly waiting on the ground level, rushed to grab the scattered cash. Attempting to capitalize on the confusion, he tried to flee the premises with the bag.
However, ED officials positioned around the perimeter acted swiftly. After a brief pursuit through the society grounds, the team intercepted the individual and successfully recovered the entire amount, totalling ₹2.1 million.
Investigation Widens
The IT businessman, whose identity is currently being withheld pending further legal proceedings, is under scrutiny for alleged financial irregularities. The ED has seized the recovered cash along with several digital devices and incriminating documents found during the apartment search.
“The attempt to discard the cash so publicly suggests a high level of desperation,” noted a source close to the investigation.

Local Impact
The incident has left residents of Western Towers in a state of shock. Security has been tightened at the gates, and the ED continues to record statements from society staff and witnesses who saw the bag fall.
The suspect caught fleeing with the money is currently in custody and is being interrogated to determine if the “drop” was a pre-planned escape strategy.
