CHANDIGARH – As the political temperature rises across Punjab, a high-level delegation of the Punjab Congress met with State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary to register a formal protest over alleged irregularities in the lead-up to the Municipal Corporation and Nagar Committee elections.
The delegation, led by senior leader Captain Sandeep Sandhu and flanked by former cabinet ministers Gurkirat Singh Kotli and Balbir Singh Sidhu, presented a memorandum demanding immediate intervention to ensure transparency and electoral fairness.

Allegations of ‘Voter Shifting’ and Gerrymandering
The core of the Congress’s grievance centres on the ongoing warding (delimitation) process and the integrity of voter rolls. The leaders alleged a tactical effort to manipulate the “electoral math” by blurring the lines between rural and urban jurisdictions.
-
Village Voter Influx: Leaders claimed that votes from neighboring villages are being intentionally moved into urban ward limits to dilute the local mandate.
-
Warding Disparities: The delegation highlighted a massive imbalance in ward sizes. “The number of voters is suspiciously high in some wards and remarkably low in others,” Captain Sandhu stated, arguing that this violates the principle of equal representation based on population ratios.
Demands for Transparency
The Congress party emphasized that the credibility of the democratic process rests on the neutrality of the Election Commission. They urged the Commissioner to implement strict monitoring protocols to prevent administrative bias.
“Fair elections are the most important pillar of a democracy,” a spokesperson for the delegation remarked. “Any disturbance in voter lists or ward demarcation will have a direct and unfair impact on the final election results.”
The delegation specifically demanded:
-
Strict Verification: A thorough audit of updated voter lists to ensure no unauthorized transfers have occurred.
-
Standardized Warding: Realignment of wards based strictly on population density to ensure a level playing field.
-
Hassle-Free Nominations: A guarantee that opposition candidates will not face arbitrary technical or administrative hurdles when filing their nomination papers.
High Stakes for Local Polls
The upcoming municipal elections are viewed as a critical litmus test for the political parties in Punjab. With the state machinery under scrutiny, the State Election Commissioner has reportedly assured the delegation that the concerns would be looked into to maintain the sanctity of the polls.
As the battle lines are drawn, the Congress party has signalled it will not hesitate to escalate its protest if the Commission fails to address these “structural discrepancies” in the coming weeks.
