AMRITSAR – A sombre atmosphere has descended upon the city of Amritsar following a devastating accident at the historic Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Baba Deep Singh Ji today. A structural collapse during ongoing construction work at the site resulted in the tragic death of two women, while several others sustained serious injuries.
The Incident
The accident occurred when heavy iron shuttering plates—part of the construction of a new multi-storey langar hall and parking complex—suddenly gave way. At the time of the collapse, a group of women were seated below, engaged in seva (selfless service) and chanting. The heavy metal components fell directly onto the devotees, sparking immediate chaos and cries for help among the gathered Sangat.
Emergency Response and Medical Care
Eyewitness accounts describe a frantic scene as the Sangat and bystanders rushed to extract those trapped beneath the debris. Local police and administration teams arrived shortly thereafter to coordinate rescue operations.
The injured were immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital for emergency stabilization. Given the severity of their injuries, several victims were subsequently transferred to advanced medical facilities, including Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital and Med Card Hospital, where they are currently undergoing intensive treatment. Medical professionals are closely monitoring the condition of those listed in critical condition.
Official Investigation Underway
ADCP Vishaljeet Singh, who arrived at the scene to assess the situation, confirmed the tragic loss of life and stated that an inquiry has been launched.
“We have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the collapse,” stated ADCP Singh. “Our primary focus is to identify if there was any negligence in the construction protocols that led to this tragedy. We will be looking at all angles, including environmental factors, before making a final determination.”
While official findings are pending, preliminary reports from the area suggest that high-velocity winds experienced throughout the day may have contributed to the instability of the temporary shuttering.
Community in Mourning
The construction project, which involves the development of a multi-storey parking and langar hall, had been entrusted to Baba Kashmir Singh Bhuriwala. The scale of the tragedy has sent waves of grief throughout the region. Local residents and devotees have expressed their profound condolences to the families of the deceased and are organizing prayers for the swift recovery of those still hospitalized.
Authorities have requested that the public avoid spreading unverified rumours while the police continue their on-site investigation.
