SC Commission Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Alleged Casteist Remarks by Union Minister Ravneet Bittu

SANGRUR, PUNJAB — The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has initiated formal proceedings against Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu following allegations of him using casteist remarks during a recent visit to Dhuri.

The Commission, led by Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi, took Suo motu cognizance of the incident after becoming aware of the controversy through various video links and reports circulating on social media platforms. The body has officially signalled a “strict stance” regarding the use of disparaging language directed at specific communities.

Formal Inquiry Launched

In an effort to ensure accountability, the Commission has issued a directive to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sangrur, requiring a comprehensive investigative report into the incident.

According to the directives issued by Chairman Garhi, the Sangrur police administration must submit the findings to the Commission by 9:00 AM on June 1, 2026, through the office of the SSP (Headquarters), Sangrur.

Context of the Controversy

The allegations stem from remarks reportedly made by the Union Minister during a public engagement in Dhuri. While the specifics of the comments have sparked significant outcry online, the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has emphasized that it is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness.

This move marks a continuation of the Commission’s recent trend of increased vigilance toward political figures and public officials. Chairman Garhi has repeatedly affirmed that the Commission will not tolerate language that undermines social harmony or violates the dignity of the Scheduled Castes community.

As of now, there has been no official statement released by the office of Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu regarding the Commission’s inquiry or the allegations themselves.

The report due on Monday is expected to be a critical turning point in determining whether further legal action will be pursued under the relevant sections of the law.
