Drug Addiction Linked to Espionage: Mastermind at Large in Bathinda Spy Camera Case

BATHINDA, PUNJAB — A chilling connection between synthetic drug abuse and anti-national activities has emerged following the arrest of two individuals in connection with a high-tech espionage operation on the Bathinda-Malout highway.

Police investigations have revealed that the suspects were allegedly recruited into a clandestine network by being lured with ‘Chitta’ (synthetic heroin), exposing a disturbing new trend where handlers exploit vulnerable, drug-dependent youth to conduct surveillance on sensitive government infrastructure.

The Mechanics of the Operation

According to police sources, the investigation cantered on the discovery of a solar-powered spy camera installed on a utility pole along the busy Malout Road. The device, which was equipped with a 4G-enabled SIM card, was reportedly designed to transmit live, real-time footage of police and military vehicle movements to handlers potentially operating from across the border.

The arrested suspects, identified as Ashok Singh and Akashdeep Singh, were interrogated throughout the week. Investigators allege that the operation’s mastermind—who remains the primary target of a statewide manhunt—used the promise of narcotics to facilitate the crime:

  • The Lure: The mastermind reportedly provided Ashok with packets of ‘Chitta’ to secure his cooperation.

  • The Identity Theft: Under the influence of the drug, Ashok allegedly allowed his personal documents to be used to procure the SIM card, which served as the critical link for the camera’s data transmission.

  • Expansion: Encouraged by the initial success, the network reportedly recruited Akashdeep to assist in the physical installation of the equipment in March 2026.

Mastermind Still at Large

As law enforcement agencies closed in on the cell, the primary architect of the espionage ring reportedly went into hiding. Police report that upon learning of the seizure of the camera and the arrests of his two accomplices, the mastermind fled the region with his entire family.

“We are tracking every possible lead to bring the mastermind to justice,” stated a senior official involved in the probe. “The interrogation of the two arrested individuals has provided us with a roadmap of the network, and we are now working to determine the extent of their reach.”

Legal Proceedings

The two accused were produced before a local court on Monday. Police successfully secured remand, which was extended through mid-week as investigators attempt to decode the digital trail left by the spy camera. The suspects are facing serious charges under the Official Secrets Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

This case marks a significant shift in regional security concerns, highlighting the dual challenge faced by Punjab: the fight against the influx of illicit drugs and the constant threat of foreign-sponsored surveillance. The Bathinda Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious unauthorized hardware or individuals loitering around critical infrastructure.
