SULTANPUR LODHI – Amid mounting concerns over rising water levels in the Beas River and the subsequent release of water from dam reservoirs, the Indian Army has launched a comprehensive proactive assessment of the flood-prone Mand area in Sultanpur Lodhi.
With intermittent rains continuing to lash both Punjab and the neighbouring hills of Himachal Pradesh, the Army’s intervention aims to bolster disaster preparedness and mitigate potential damage to life and property in this sensitive region.
Strategic Ground Assessment
An Army team conducted an intensive survey of the Mand area today, focusing heavily on vulnerable villages along the riverbanks, including village Baupur Jadid. Using a combination of ground-level inspections and advanced drone surveillance, officials meticulously documented the state of fragile embankments, analysed the current river flow, and identified high-risk zones that could face severe impact if water levels surge further.
Community-Led Intelligence
The mission was significantly aided by the local population. During the visit, residents provided Army officials with critical insights regarding last year’s devastating floods, including specific details on previous embankment breaches and the primary factors that exacerbated the crisis.
This feedback is essential for the Army’s “pre-emptive planning” approach, ensuring that local knowledge is integrated into official emergency protocols. Discussions also covered the identification of high-ground locations suitable for relief camps and the establishment of secure evacuation routes.
Commitment to Public Safety
Addressing the growing anxiety among the local populace, the Army officials emphasized that the situation is currently being monitored closely and remains under control.
“Our objective is to ensure that all necessary logistical and rescue arrangements are in place well before any potential escalation,” stated a spokesperson. “We have documented the current conditions and are submitting detailed reports to higher authorities to ensure that, should an emergency arise, our response is swift and effective.”
The Indian Army has appealed to the residents to remain calm and vigilant, offering a firm assurance: “The Army remains committed to the safety of this region and will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Mand in any emergency.”
