Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister acknowledges election outcome, emphasizes need for infrastructure development
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s decisive victory in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections has drawn reactions from political leaders across the country. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while congratulating the winning party, stressed that the BJP now faces a significant responsibility to live up to the expectations of Mumbai’s residents.
Speaking on the election results, Abdullah acknowledged the democratic process, noting that elections inevitably produce winners and losers. However, he emphasized that the party securing the most seats must prioritize fulfilling the aspirations of citizens through concrete action and development initiatives.

Infrastructure Development Key to Success
Reflecting on his personal experience, Abdullah, who lived in Mumbai for three years, highlighted the importance of infrastructure development in urban growth. He pointed to the Coastal Road project as an exemplary achievement that was once considered an ambitious dream.
“Earlier it was difficult to even imagine that a major project like the Coastal Road would be built, but today it is a reality,” Abdullah said. He stressed that undertaking more such development works would directly benefit Mumbai’s citizens and improve their quality of life.
Election Results Overview
The BJP emerged as the clear victor in the municipal corporation elections, securing overwhelming support from voters. The party won 89 seats out of the total and received 11,79,273 votes, representing a 21.58% vote share across the corporation. Among winning candidates, the BJP’s vote share stood at an impressive 45.22%.
The BJP-led alliance strengthened its position when its ally, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), secured 29 additional seats, creating a formidable bloc in the 264-seat BMC.
Opposition Performance
The opposition alliance of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) managed to win a combined 71 seats, establishing itself as the main challenge to the ruling coalition. The Indian National Congress won 24 seats, while smaller parties captured the remaining positions: AIMIM secured 8 seats, NCP won 3 seats, Samajwadi Party won 2 seats, and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) obtained 1 seat.

The Road Ahead
With the mandate clearly in hand, the BJP faces the expectant gaze of Mumbai’s residents. The election results reflect public confidence in the party’s vision for the city’s future. However, as Abdullah’s remarks suggest, electoral victory is merely the beginning—translating public expectations into tangible development and improved civic services will be the true test of the new administration’s commitment to the people of Mumbai.
