Dr. Meenakshi Sood, a government medical officer, reportedly took her own life following years of alleged domestic turmoil.
A pall of gloom has descended over the medical community in Punjab following the death of Dr. Meenakshi Sood, who was found hanging in her residence. The incident has sparked outrage, with the victim’s family levelling grave allegations against her husband, Dr. Piyush Sood, and her in-laws, citing a pattern of systemic harassment and financial exploitation.
The victim, a government doctor stationed in Kapurthala, married Dr. Piyush Sood in 2018. Following her untimely death, her father, Pramod Kumar, filed a formal complaint at Police Station Division No. 6, leading to the registration of an FIR under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Key Allegations:
- Financial Coercion: The victim’s family alleges that Dr. Piyush Sood fraudulently obtained loans totalling ₹2.5 crore in Dr. Meenakshi’s name without her knowledge.
- Systemic Abuse: Dr. Meenakshi reportedly endured years of mental and physical harassment, including an alleged strangulation attempt in 2025.
- Marital Dispute: The couple had been living apart since July 2025, during which time the victim discovered the unauthorized financial liabilities.
According to the police, the accused has absconded since the FIR was registered. Authorities are currently conducting raids at various suspected locations to apprehend him. Investigators are now broadening the scope of the inquiry to include a thorough audit of the financial transactions and the dynamics of the family dispute.
Pramod Kumar, the grieving father, stated that his daughter’s income was frequently diverted to service loans taken by her in-laws for personal assets, including luxury vehicles. The victim, who was reportedly contemplating a legal divorce to escape the abusive environment, had been under severe mental distress upon discovering the magnitude of the debt amassed in her name.
As the investigation continues, the focus has turned toward the accountability of those associated with the National Eye Care Hospital, where the accused maintained professional ties. The family of the deceased has demanded a swift and impartial investigation, seeking justice for the alleged years of exploitation that preceded this tragic end.
