Gurugram Raid: ₹70 Lakh Mounjaro Consignment Seized in Crackdown on Illegal Weight-Loss Trade

GURUGRAM In a major crackdown on the illegal pharmaceutical trade, the Drug Control Department conducted a high-stakes raid in the DLF Phase-4 area, seizing a massive consignment of the high-demand injection Mounjaro worth ₹70 lakh. The operation has exposed a sophisticated supply chain funnelling diabetes and weight-loss medications through the National Capital Region (NCR) black market.

The Raid: Intelligence-Led Operation

Acting on precise intelligence, a specialized team intercepted a vehicle linked to an employee of “Hampert,” a local company. Upon searching the vehicle, officials recovered thousands of doses of Mounjaro.

  • Suspect in Custody: The occupant, identified as Mujammil, was taken into custody.

  • The Route: The investigation revealed the drugs were dispatched from Delhi’s Bhagirath Palace—a notorious wholesale drug hub—but were billed to a Gurugram address to evade detection.

  • The Valuation: The seized doses are valued between ₹13,000 and ₹25,000 each on the black market, reflecting a significant markup over legal prices.

Mounjaro (active ingredient: tirzepatide) is a breakthrough medication developed by the U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly. While it was officially launched in India in March 2025 for Type 2 Diabetes, it has become a viral sensation for weight loss.

Expert Note: In India, while legal for diabetes, the drug is frequently used “off-label” for obesity management. The “misuse” cited by officials often refers to the illegal sale without prescriptions and the lack of a cold chain (the drug must be kept between 2°C and 8°C), which makes black-market versions potentially dangerous.

Market Dynamics in 2026

The seizure comes at a time when the Indian weight-loss market is seeing a “gold rush.”

  • Price Wars: While Mounjaro is sold legally through partners like Tata 1MG and Apollo, illegal traders are exploiting supply gaps.

  • Generic Competition: Competitors like Novo Nordisk have recently slashed prices of rival drugs Ozempic and Wegovy by up to 48% to maintain market share against a surge of Indian-made generic alternatives.

Current Investigation Status

The Drug Control Department is now tracing the “entire supply chain” to dismantle the network. Officials are specifically looking into how thousands of doses were diverted from wholesale markets in Delhi to private distributors in Haryana.

“We intend to trace the entire supply chain and take action against the entire network involved,” stated a department official, warning the public against purchasing these injections from unverified sources.
