BARNALA — Unidentified armed assailants opened fire outside the ancestral residence of prominent Punjabi singer Gulab Sidhu in Pharwahi village during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. No injuries were reported, though multiple bullets pierced the front entrance of the property.
The incident occurred around 1:30 AM when three masked assailants arrived on a motorcycle. According to eyewitnesses and village Sarpanch Jagsir Singh, two suspects discharged roughly 8 to 12 rounds directly at the main gate before fleeing the scene, while the third recorded the shooting on a mobile phone.
Sidhu was not present at the residence during the attack. Family sources confirmed that the singer is currently touring in Australia for music events, though relatives were inside the house at the time of the firing.
Local police teams, led by senior district officials, arrived shortly after the incident to secure the area and recover bullet casings for forensic evaluation.
“An FIR has been registered, and a thorough probe is underway,” said Barnala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammad Sarfaraz Alam. “We are reviewing footage from CCTV cameras installed along the village approaches and exit routes to identify the suspects.”
Sidhu had previously received extortion demands and death threats, prompting the Punjab Police to deploy two security personnel for his protection.
Investigators are also verifying a social media audio clip in which fugitive gangster Balwinder Singh, alias Doni Bal, purportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. Police stated that all angles, including organized crime and extortion networks, are being aggressively pursued.
