Navjot Kaur Sidhu Says Former Cricketer Ready for Comeback; Alleges Internal Strife and “Money-for-Hire” Politics in Punjab Congress
The possibility of former cricketer and political leader Navjot Singh Sidhu making a comeback to active politics has gained momentum following statements by his wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu. Speaking to reporters on Saturday after meeting Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, she made it clear that her husband is willing to re-enter the political arena under one condition: if the Congress party declares him as its Chief Ministerial candidate for Punjab.

“We Don’t Have 500 Crore Rupees”
In a sharp critique of the functioning of Punjab’s Congress unit, Navjot Kaur alleged that the party operates on a transactional basis where political positions are determined by financial contributions rather than merit or capability. She sarcastically remarked that her family lacks the resources to participate in such arrangements.
“We don’t have 500 crore rupees to buy the Chief Minister’s chair,” she said, suggesting that whoever possesses such funds becomes the Chief Minister candidate. When asked if anyone had solicited money from her family, she responded, “No one has asked for it, but that’s how it is in politics.”
Factionalism Stalling Sidhu’s Advancement
Navjot Kaur also exposed what she described as severe internal strife within the Punjab Congress. According to her, at least five party leaders are already vying for the Chief Minister’s position and are actively working to prevent Sidhu from advancing within the party hierarchy.
“The internal factionalism within Congress would prevent him from moving forward,” she stated, adding that much depends on whether the party’s high command understands the gravity of the situation.
Emotional Bond with Congress and Priyanka Gandhi
Despite her criticism of the party’s internal dynamics, Navjot Kaur emphasized that Sidhu remains emotionally attached to the Congress party and to Priyanka Gandhi, the party’s general secretary in-charge of UP. This emotional connection, she suggested, forms the basis of her husband’s willingness to return if given the Chief Ministerial nomination.
“Sidhu is emotionally attached to Congress and Priyanka Gandhi,” she said, underscoring that personal loyalty rather than personal ambition drives his political interest.
No Comment on BJP Option
When questioned about whether Sidhu might consider an offer from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if that party extended the same opportunity, Navjot Kaur declined to comment. “I can’t speak on my husband’s behalf,” she said, leaving the question open.
Content Outside Active Politics
Navjot Kaur concluded by stating that if Congress does not nominate her husband as its Chief Ministerial candidate, he remains content with his current life outside active politics, focusing on his personal earnings and endeavours.
The remarks have intensified speculation about Sidhu’s political future and have brought attention to the competitive dynamics and internal tensions within the Punjab Congress unit at a critical time for the party’s political fortunes in the state.

About Navjot Singh Sidhu: The former Indian cricketer and television personality has had a turbulent political career, having switched between the Congress and BJP. He served as the President of the Punjab Congress Committee but stepped down in 2021 citing differences with the party leadership.
