A New Dawn for Nari Shakti: PM Modi Calls for Collective Resolve on Women’s Reservation

NEW DELHI — In a major push for gender parity in Indian governance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a clarion call to the nation, framing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women’s Reservation Act) as the essential catalyst for achieving a ‘Developed India’ (Viksit Bharat).

Through a video message and a comprehensive article published on his official website, the Prime Minister described the integration of women into legislative bodies not merely as a policy shift, but as a historic necessity to strengthen the “vibrancy and inclusivity” of the world’s largest democracy.

Empowerment as the Engine of Growth

The Prime Minister’s message cantered on the concept of Matrushakti (Mother Power). He argued that for India to reach its full potential in the 21st century, the “complete capabilities” of women must be harnessed across all sectors—from science and technology to the halls of Parliament.

“Increased participation of women enriches our national discourse and improves the quality of governance,” PM Modi stated. “It renders our democracy more sensitive, balanced, and accountable.”

Key Objectives of the Initiative

  • Legislative Representation: Boosting female participation in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.

  • Democratic Depth: Moving beyond symbolic representation to ensure women occupy their “rightful place” in decision-making.

  • Institutional Strength: Creating a more representative government that reflects nearly half of the country’s population.

A Roadmap to 2029

While the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was passed in September 2023, the Prime Minister emphasized that the transition from law to implementation is now at a critical juncture. He confirmed that the government is laying the groundwork to ensure the benefits of the reservation are fully realized in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and subsequent Assembly polls.

He acknowledged that while efforts for women’s reservation had been stalled for decades, the current era of “hope and positivity” provides a unique window to finalize this historic reform.

Honouring the Legacy of Reformers

The Prime Minister’s address was rich with cultural and historical references, timing his message alongside national festivals like Rongali Bihu, Vishu, and Baisakhi.

Significantly, he invoked the legacies of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, linking the reservation bill to their lifelong struggle for social justice and equality. By referencing their birth anniversaries, the PM positioned the Act as a modern fulfillment of India’s founding principles of equity and inclusion.

A Call for Political Unity

In a rare appeal for bipartisanship, PM Modi urged all political parties to rise above narrow interests. He emphasized that the empowerment of women is a national mission rather than a partisan agenda.
