KOLKATA — In a political tectonic shift that has redrawn the map of Eastern India, Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party on Friday. The 55-year-old leader is set to take the oath of office as the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister of West Bengal tomorrow, Saturday, May 9, at 11:00 AM.
The announcement came following a high-stakes meeting at the party’s state headquarters in Kolkata, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi. The proposal for Adhikari’s leadership was moved by State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya and received a thundering endorsement from the newly elected MLAs.
A Landslide Mandate
The BJP’s victory marks the end of over a decade of Trinamool Congress rule. Out of the 293 seats where elections were held, the BJP secured a commanding 207 seats, well clear of the majority mark.
Adhikari himself emerged as the “Giant Killer” of this election cycle. He achieved a rare double victory, winning from both Nandigram and Bhawanipur. His victory in Bhawanipur was particularly symbolic, as he defeated the outgoing Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, in her own home constituency.

From Grassroots to the Secretariat
Suvendu Adhikari’s ascent to the top post is the culmination of a three-decade-long journey in public service.
-
Early Beginnings: Born on December 15, 1970, in Karkuli village, East Medinipur, Adhikari started his career in 1995 as a councilor for the Kantai Municipality under the Congress banner.
-
The Medinipur Strongman: Often called the “King of Medinipur,” he gained national prominence for his leadership during the anti-land acquisition movements in Nandigram.
-
Legislative Record: He served as an MLA in 2005 and later as a Member of Parliament for Tamluk in 2009 and 2014.
-
The Turning Point: In December 2020, he made the high-profile switch from the TMC to the BJP. After defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021, he served as the Leader of the Opposition for five years, a period during which he methodically built the momentum that led to this week’s victory.
A Political Dynasty
While Adhikari remains unmarried and dedicated to full-time politics, he hails from one of Bengal’s most prominent political families.
-
His father, Shishir Adhikari, is a former Union Minister.
-
His brothers, Dibyendu and Soumendra, have both served as MPs and MLAs, maintaining the family’s deep-rooted influence in the Medinipur belt.
-
His mother, Gayatri Adhikari, is widely recognized for her lifelong commitment to social welfare in the region.

The Road Ahead
The swearing-in ceremony tomorrow is expected to be a massive show of strength for the NDA, with several central ministers and Chief Ministers from neighbouring states scheduled to attend.
For Adhikari, the challenge now shifts from campaigning to governance. As he prepares to take the helm, the eyes of the nation are on West Bengal to see how the “Son of Medinipur” navigates the complexities of leading one of India’s most politically vibrant and economically crucial states.
