Amritsar Police Foil Targeted Killing Plot; Two Linked to Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Gang Arrested

AMRITSAR, PUNJAB — The Amritsar Commissionerate Police successfully dismantled a violent conspiracy on Saturday, May 23, 2026, arresting two operatives associated with the notorious Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang just before they could execute a targeted killing.

The operation, which involved a brief exchange of gunfire, took place in the Fatehpur area under the jurisdiction of the Islamabad Police Station.

The Encounter

A police patrol team, led by Sub-Inspector Rakesh Kumar, was conducting a routine search operation when they spotted two men acting suspiciously on a motorcycle. When signalled to stop, the pair ignored police orders and attempted to flee. The suspects then opened fire on the officers in a bid to escape.

In a controlled retaliatory move made in self-defence, the police returned fire, wounding one of the suspects in the leg. The injured man dropped his firearm, and both individuals were immediately taken into custody. The wounded suspect was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Connections to Organized Crime

Authorities have identified the suspects as:

  • Kulbir Singh: A resident of Dhadde Fateh Singh village (Hoshiarpur). Police records indicate he is already involved in four criminal cases, primarily relating to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and theft.

  • Jashandeep Singh (alias Maya): A resident of Patti Chambal (Amritsar). He currently has two cases registered against him under the Arms Act.

Preliminary investigations have established that the duo were acting under the direct instructions of Ankush Bahman, a gangster currently operating from abroad. The suspects were reportedly tasked with the targeted assassination of two members of a rival criminal faction.

Evidence Seized

During the arrest, the police recovered significant evidence, including:

  • One .30 bore Chinese pistol.

  • Four live cartridges.

  • Two empty shells.

Legal Action

Following the arrest, the police registered FIR No. 152 at the Islamabad Police Station under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of high-ranking officials, including DCP (Detective) Ravinderpal Singh, ADCP (Detective) Jagbinder Singh, ACP (Detective) Harminder Singh Sandhu, and Inspector Ravi Kumar, In-charge of the Anti-Gangster Operations Cell.

The successful apprehension is being hailed as a major pre-emptive strike against the resurgence of gang-related violence in the region, effectively preventing what could have been a fatal escalation of inter-gang hostilities.
