Tragedy at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant: At Least Eight Killed in Molten Metal Leakage

VISAKHAPATNAM, ANDHRA PRADESH — A catastrophic industrial accident occurred at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least eight workers and leaving several others critically injured.

The Incident

The disaster struck at the facility’s SMS-2 (Steel Melting Shop) and STC-3 heat unit during routine operations. According to preliminary reports, an explosion occurred within a ladle, causing a massive spillage of molten iron. The liquid metal engulfed workers stationed in the immediate vicinity, leading to instantaneous fatalities and severe thermal injuries for those nearby.

Following the breach, a fire broke out within the unit, significantly hampering initial rescue efforts and creating fears that additional personnel remain trapped amidst the debris and structural damage.

Rescue and Relief Operations

Emergency response teams, including specialized fire and safety units, were deployed to the plant immediately. Personnel are currently working to contain the fire and reach the affected areas to search for trapped employees. Medical teams are on-site, providing critical care to the injured before transporting them to nearby hospitals equipped to handle severe burn trauma.

Official Response

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha has taken active charge of the crisis. Upon receiving the news, she initiated direct communication with the Visakhapatnam District Collector and the Police Commissioner to ensure that relief operations are expedited. Minister Anitha has since departed for the accident site to oversee the situation firsthand and coordinate the distribution of necessary medical and logistical support.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed profound grief over the loss of life and has directed the plant administration to prioritize the safety and treatment of all surviving workers.

Ongoing Investigation

While initial findings point to a mechanical failure in the ladle, a formal investigation into the safety protocols and maintenance logs of the SMS-2 unit is expected to be launched by industrial safety authorities.

As of Monday evening, management and local authorities have yet to release a final, consolidated casualty report. Families of the workers have gathered outside the plant gates in distress, awaiting official updates on the status of their loved ones.
