Union Minister Ravneet Bittu Appears Before Punjab SC Commission, Issues Apology Over Remarks

CHANDIGARH Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu appeared before the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission on Wednesday to address the controversy surrounding alleged casteist remarks directed at police personnel during a heated confrontation in Dhuri last month.

The appearance marks a significant development in a case that had sparked public outcry and raised concerns about the conduct of public officials.

The Incident in Context

On May 26, 2026—the day of the Punjab civic body elections—Mr. Bittu was involved in a tense standoff with police officers in Dhuri. The Minister had intervened to demand the release of local BJP leader Onkar Singh, who had been detained by authorities on charges of campaigning during the mandatory “silent period” preceding the vote.

During the exchange, which was recorded and subsequently went viral on social media, Mr. Bittu allegedly used language that was perceived as offensive and casteist toward the police personnel on duty.

Formal Apology and Resolution

After failing to attend two previous summons, the Union Minister appeared before Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi. In his statement, Mr. Bittu expressed regret, admitting that the language used during the heat of the moment was “legally inappropriate.” He further acknowledged that, given his position as a Union Minister, he bore a heightened responsibility for his conduct and public rhetoric.

The Minister confirmed that, as a gesture of accountability, he had already removed the controversial video footage from his social media channels.

Following the submission of his written explanation and apology, the Commission decided to officially dispose of the case.

Commission’s Directive for Social Harmony

While the Commission accepted the apology, Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi emphasized the importance of maintaining social cohesion and respecting the dignity of all citizens, particularly those from marginalized communities.

To conclude the matter constructively, the Commission recommended that the Minister visit four significant sites of cultural and religious importance to pay his respects:

  • Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar

  • Sri Ram Tirath Temple, Amritsar

  • Sachkhand Sri Dera Ballan, Jalandhar

  • Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial, Phillaur

The Commission stated that these visits would serve as a meaningful gesture to acknowledge the sentiments of the community and contribute toward healing the social friction caused by the incident.
