Punjab Municipal elections soon: Supreme Court orders notification and completion of election process within eight weeks.

In a PIL filed by Malerkotla resident Beant Singh, the High Court was told that the tenure of 42 Municipal Councils of Punjab has ended several months ago. The tenure of some has ended more than two years ago, due to which development work has stopped.

The Municipal elections which have been pending in Punjab for a long time will now be held soon. The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the notification of elections within 15 days and completion of the election process within the next eight weeks.

The order given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on November 6 on behalf of the state government was challenged in the Supreme Court. In that order, the High Court had issued a notice of contempt to the Punjab government and ordered it to issue the notification of elections within 10 days. The order said that if they do not do so, then be ready for contempt proceedings. Along with this, a fine of Rs 50,000 was also warned.

Beant Singh, a resident of Malerkotla, had told the High Court in a PIL that the tenure of 42 municipal councils of Punjab had ended several months ago. The tenure of some has ended more than two years ago, due to which development work has stopped.
