Supreme Court Allows Green Firecrackers in Delhi-NCR Ahead of Diwali

New Delhi, October 15:
In a major relief ahead of Diwali celebrations, the Supreme Court on Tuesday permitted the limited use of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR. The court relaxed the ongoing ban, allowing the use of NEERI-certified green firecrackers from October 18 to October 21 during specific hours — 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Delivering the order, Chief Justice B.R. Gavai said,

“We must adopt a balanced approach. Permission must be granted with restraint without compromising the environment.”

The court made it clear that the relaxation is temporary and that the ban will continue after October 21. Strict action has been ordered against manufacturers and sellers violating the guidelines.

Conditions and Restrictions

  • Only green firecrackers certified by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) will be allowed.

  • Firecrackers from outside the Delhi-NCR region are strictly prohibited.

  • Manufacturers must ensure that each product carries a QR code to verify authenticity.

  • Police have been directed to form patrol teams to monitor markets and prevent illegal sales.

  • If fake or uncertified firecrackers are found, licenses will be immediately suspended.

The court also instructed authorities to upload QR codes of green firecrackers online, enabling public verification and transparency in sales.

This order comes as an attempt to balance the festive spirit with environmental safety, allowing citizens limited celebration while keeping pollution levels in check.
