Tarn Taran: The district was shaken late Friday night when unidentified assailants opened fire at an immigration centre near the Tarn Taran bus stand, allegedly in retaliation for non-payment of a massive ₹50 lakh extortion demand. The daring attack, carried out in a busy area, has triggered serious questions about rising gangster activity in the region.

According to information, Parminder Singh, owner of Five Star Immigration Centre and resident of Bharowal village, had already filed a written complaint with the SSP months earlier. He reported receiving threatening calls from an international number. The caller introduced himself as the brother of notorious gangster Jaisal Chambal and demanded ₹50 lakh as protection money.
While the CIA staff and Goindwal Sahib police were probing the extortion attempt, the situation escalated dramatically on Friday night. Two masked shooters on a motorcycle reached the immigration office located on the second floor near the focal point. After asking nearby residents about the owner’s whereabouts, the attackers fired two rounds directly at the immigration centre before fleeing.
The entire incident, captured clearly on CCTV, shows the attackers executing the act with precision and without hesitation — a clear message meant to intimidate.

Inspector Gurcharan Singh, SHO Tarn Taran City, confirmed that a case has been registered and CIA teams are conducting an intensive investigation. Police have launched a manhunt to identify the attackers and trace the overseas number used for the extortion calls.
Authorities say more arrests are likely as the probe deepens into the gangster network behind the attack.
