CM Mann Announces ₹16,209 Crore Road Development Plan for Punjab

25,547 km of new roads to be constructed across the state

Chandigarh, November 29, 2025 Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday announced an ambitious road infrastructure project that will see the construction of 25,547 kilometres of new roads across the state, involving an expenditure of ₹16,209 crore.

Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, CM Mann revealed that announcements for 19,343 kilometres of link roads have already been made as part of this comprehensive development initiative. In a move to ensure quality and longevity, contractors will be mandated to maintain the newly constructed roads for five years post-completion.

This is a transformative project for Punjab’s infrastructure. These roads will improve connectivity across villages and towns, boosting economic activity and making life easier for our people,” Mann stated during the briefing.

Appeal to Striking Roadways Employees

The Chief Minister also addressed the ongoing roadways employees’ strike, urging union representatives to engage in dialogue with the government rather than resorting to protests. “I appeal to the striking roadways employees to sit together with us and resolve all issues. Protests are not the solution to any problem. Union representatives should present their views to the government, and we must refrain from doing anything that causes inconvenience to the public,” Mann said.

Centre-State Funding Dispute

In a sharp critique of the central government, CM Mann claimed that Punjab has not received a single rupee from the ₹1,600 crore special flood relief package announced by the Centre. “We are still waiting for the promised flood relief funds. Not a single rupee has reached Punjab yet,” he asserted.

The Chief Minister also took a swipe at Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan’s recent visit to Punjab, suggesting it was purely recreational. “Shivraj Singh Chauhan visits Punjab solely for tourism purposes,” Mann remarked.

Infrastructure Push Amid Challenges

The road development announcement comes at a time when Punjab is grappling with multiple challenges, including labour unrest and alleged financial constraints due to pending central assistance. The state government has positioned this infrastructure initiative as a catalyst for economic growth and improved rural-urban connectivity.

The project details, including timelines and specific road locations, are expected to be released in the coming weeks. Officials indicated that the tendering process for the first phase of construction would begin shortly.

With this announcement, the Mann-led AAP government aims to deliver on its promise of infrastructure development, though questions remain about funding mechanisms and implementation timelines amid the state’s ongoing disputes with the central government.
